Discover Holín: Nature, Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Holín
Nature, history and trails offer different starting points for planning a stay in Holín. The entire municipality lies within the Český ráj Protected Landscape Area. Other highlights include the Prachov Rocks, a museum with a regional focus and archaeological remains. You can choose which topics to explore in greater depth and combine them with the various trails and their respective requirements.
Nature and trails in the Prachov Rocks
The Prachov Rocks Nature Reserve was established in 1933. The Vyhlídka Míru and Vyhlídka Českého ráje viewpoints offer views of the Prachov Rocks, the ruins of Trosky Castle and Ještěd. When choosing a route, the length and whether it is suitable for pushchairs are clear differences: the educational trail through the Prachov Rocks is 5 kilometres long and not suitable for pushchairs. By contrast, the Pelíškova dětská naučná stezka is a 1-kilometre circular trail around the Pelíšek reservoir and is suitable for pushchairs. It opened in July 2024; check current access arrangements before your trip.
A tourist route through the Prachov Rocks is described as accessible. It starts and ends at the Prachov car park in Holín-Prachov; assistance is required to use it. Check the latest access information before your visit here, too.
Museum, archaeology and the village streetscape
The Muzeum přírody Český ráj in Holín, Prachov 37, has a permanent exhibition about the nature and history of the Prachov Rocks, Český ráj and the Jičín region. The museum garden includes a small botanical garden, animal enclosures and outdoor terrariums, as well as ponds, an insect hotel, a beetle habitat and the Pelíšková zahrádka. Each year, the museum hosts the Žabí běh, bird-song excursions, a gathering of amphibian and reptile enthusiasts, and other public programmes. Before visiting, check access arrangements and, for individual events, their dates and programme details.
Holín and Prachov also have tangible archaeological history: Hradiště Prachov is designated an immovable cultural monument of archaeological significance. Its settlement remains span the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, the La Tène period, the Roman-Germanic period and the early Middle Ages. The remains of Pařez Castle, also known as Husí nůška, lie on the northwestern edge of the Prachov Rocks. The castle is recorded as existing as early as 1370. Holín is also home to a farmstead dating from 1850, house number 11, and a statue of the Virgin Mary dating from 1867.
Holín’s village streetscape follows a central road. It is lined with rural houses with larger or smaller farm buildings, as well as urban-style houses. Another expression of the region’s history can be found in climbing: sandstone climbing in the Prachov Rocks has a tradition dating back to 1907 and is still practised there today. Climbing is permitted only with the consent of the Schlik family, the owners, and in compliance with current operating, climbing and nature conservation rules. Check the current rules before your visit.
Cycling, buses and other activities
The Jičín–Holín cycle path connects the western part of Jičín with Holín and can also be used on foot. At the edge of Jičín, it passes underneath road 35 through an underpass. For a longer circular route, try the Zlatá stezka Českého ráje: it passes through Jičín, Holín, Prachov, Horní Lochov, Brada and Kbelnice and is 26.5 kilometres long. Routes may change; check the latest information in advance.
Jičín bus route 510 serves the “Holín, Prachov, Skalní město” stop. Check the latest timetable before travelling. Depending on the season, a tourist bike bus connects Jičín, Holín, the Prachov Rocks, Pařezská Lhota, Mladějov, Sobotka and Podkost from 30 April to 30 September. Check the current operating days and timetable for this service.
For another activity, the Čistý pond beyond Holín, towards the Prachov Rocks, offers a place to swim. Check the current bathing conditions on site. This will help you plan according to your travel interests and the specific trail, timetable or activity conditions.
