Broumov offers several specific points of interest for culture enthusiasts, including churches, a monastery and the town hall. The “Broumovské stěny I” hiking route also starts at the Old Town Hall. In the wider Broumovsko region, a network of marked trails through a varied landscape adds to the options. For your travel planning, architectural history in the town and hiking in the region are distinct areas of focus.

Churches and architectural history in Broumov

The Church of the Virgin Mary in the cemetery on the southeastern edge of Broumov is considered the oldest surviving religious building in the Czech Republic built entirely of wood, as well as one of the oldest structures of its kind in Central Europe. Its construction consists of sturdy oak beams joined together without a single nail. This church therefore combines a far-reaching historical significance with a specific architectural feature.

The Church of St. Peter and Paul offers a different point of interest: it received its tall square tower in 1477. Broumov’s Old Town Hall is a listed cultural monument and is one of the oldest town halls in Bohemian subject towns. The buildings each have a different focus: the cemetery church is notable for its materials and construction, St. Peter and Paul for its tower with a documented date, and the town hall for its listed status and historical significance.

Monastery and museum

Broumov Monastery offers a tour that is open year-round and is also suitable for children. The monastery garden is open to the public free of charge. Seasonal schedules may change, so check them before visiting the garden.

The Muzeum Broumovska has a permanent exhibition in six halls. Together with the churches and the monastery tour, this offers the opportunity to put together a cultural program featuring a variety of formats: religious buildings, a tour of the monastery and a museum visit. If you would like to include an exhibition as well as the buildings, the museum offers a distinct cultural focus.

Hiking in Broumovsko

In the CHKO Broumovsko Protected Landscape Area, the terrain, forests, meadows and pastures provide suitable conditions for hiking. Meandering waterways with riverside vegetation, scattered trees and shrubs, wildlife, rare flora and numerous cultural monuments also shape the landscape. A relatively dense network of marked hiking trails of varying difficulty connects remarkable places in Broumovsko.

One specific route is “Broumovské stěny I”: it starts at Broumov’s Old Town Hall, leads to the Zaječí rokle trail junction and continues from there along a yellow-marked hiking trail toward Kamenná brána and Koruna. The regional network of trails lets you choose between different levels of difficulty, while the named route provides a specific starting point and clearly identified landmarks to help you find your way.

Brewing history in Olivětín

The brewery museum in Olivětín offers guided tours of the production areas for organized visitor groups. The tours provide insights into the production of one of the oldest monastery beers. If you are planning a group tour, it is advisable to check the arrangements in advance, as group options may change.

There is also a small permanent exhibition devoted mainly to the history of the brewery. Details of the exhibition may change. The two types of visit therefore offer clearly distinct experiences: the tour takes groups through the production areas and provides insights into the brewing process, while the exhibition focuses on the brewery’s history.
