Zlic brings together local history and several described walking routes. One highlight is the Chapel of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary; there is also a memorial stone to Božena Němcová and points of interest along routes around Zlic. To plan your trip, you can consider cultural attractions and route details separately, then decide which themes you would like to focus on.

Cultural History in Zlic

The Chapel of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was built in 1714 at the expense of local residents. It was built in response to a plague epidemic that severely affected the local population in 1713. The chapel’s later additions are also precisely dated: a new Stations of the Cross, with 14 images by Jarmila Zárubová, was installed there in 2002.

Three religious services are held at the chapel each year, along with the Zlíčer pilgrimage and the church fair. The pilgrimage and church fair are celebrated in September on the Sunday and Monday following 8 September. As the schedule may change, check the latest dates before travelling for these events.

Since 1975, a figurative memorial stone to Božena Němcová has stood at the entrance to Babiččino údolí, in a park at a crossroads in Zlic. The chapel and memorial stone therefore offer different historical points of interest among the local attractions described here.

Walking Routes and Points of Interest

Walking Route No. 1 is an 8.5 km circular route from Česká Skalice via Rozkoš, Dubno and Zlic, returning to Česká Skalice. Leaving Česká Skalice in the direction of Náchod, the route first follows the red-marked trail to Autocamping Rozkoš, then turns towards Zlic. Near Zlic, it meets a green-marked trail at the monument to Božena Němcová and continues over a bridge. Check trail conditions locally before planning your walk.

Walking Route No. 3 offers a different route: it reaches Zlic along the Úpa River via Vilémův Bridge. It then passes the 1866 military cemetery on its way towards Česká Skalice. Route No. 1 is described as an 8.5 km circular route; the description of Route No. 3 focuses on its course along the river, the bridge and the cemetery as waypoints.

The Česká Skalice–Svinišťany–Josefov 1866 educational trail also has a stop in Zlic, titled “Austrian Left Wing.” The 7 km Jakub-Míla circular route also runs nearby, passing cultural and natural monuments in Babiččino údolí. This route can be reached from the Zlic bus stop, about 1.5 km away. This is an approximate distance; check current conditions if travelling by public transport.

The Babiččino údolí educational trail runs in the wider area around Zlic. It is 8 km long, has 27 stops and passes through a protected area. The different lengths and waypoints help you distinguish the routes described here for planning purposes, without treating their respective courses as identical.
