For planning a trip to Všenory, several highlights stand out: the museum dedicated to Marina Tsvetaeva, sacred architectural history and an arboretum with an extensive collection of woody plants. This lets you shape your stay around the subject that interests you most, rather than treating cultural history and botany as one and the same. When looking for a hotel in Všenory, start by considering whether the museum and historic buildings or the botanical collection are more central to your reason for travelling. The railway station on regional rail line 171 is a separate point of reference for your journey.

Literature and sacred architectural history

The Všenory Museum – Marina Tsvetaeva Centre is located in Všenory’s cultural centre. Its exhibition is dedicated to the life and work of Marina Tsvetaeva, giving it a biographical focus. The church, chapel and altar, by contrast, draw attention to architecture and sacred art.

The Church of St Wenceslas is listed as a cultural monument by the Czech Ministry of Culture. Originally a Romanesque building, it was remodelled in the Baroque style in the 1730s, with a cruciform floor plan. The cruciform floor plan describes the layout, while the reference to the Baroque style concerns the remodelling. The shape of the floor plan and the architectural character can therefore be considered as distinct features.

A work of sacred art to look out for is the “Mokropecký Altar”: a three-panel painting on wood from a late Gothic Marian altarpiece dating to the beginning of the 16th century. The work is kept in the depot of the Prague Archbishopric. Its three panels, wooden support and late Gothic origins provide different points of reference: form, material and period.

The Chapel of St John the Baptist, built in the Neo-Renaissance style, stands above the family crypt of the Nolč family. Compared with the Romanesque and Baroque architectural history of the Church of St Wenceslas, it combines a different style with a specific family connection. Všenory thus showcases a range of architectural features and connections to sacred art.

Arboretum and historic garden culture

The Všenory Arboretum is a botanical highlight. It covers 2.5 hectares on a north-facing slope. Around 3,500 different species and cultivars of woody plants grow there, including yews, thujas, spruces, oaks, beeches, cypresses, larches, pines, birches, Douglas firs, firs and ginkgo trees. These examples include both deciduous and coniferous trees and give a sense of the collection’s diversity. The figure is approximate and may change as the arboretum develops.

Visits to the arboretum are possible at any time by prior telephone arrangement, so be sure to arrange your visit by phone in advance. The Teyrovský Voluptuary adds a historic park dimension to the botanical perspective: it covered four hectares and was also botanically notable. While the arboretum centres on its collection of woody plants and its hillside setting, the Teyrovský Voluptuary belongs to the history of historic parks.
