Discover Podolanka
Accommodation in Podolanka
Discover Podolanka through several clearly distinct historical traces: an early mention of its name, religious buildings, and a war memorial. There is also information about a cycling route and an information board at RybnĂk Jordánek. If you are planning a stay, you can choose between local history, cultural heritage, and practical guidance; each topic has its own historical or practical significance.
Local History and the Name
The name Podolanka was first mentioned in 1658 in reference to an inn located in a valley near Jenštejn. One likely explanation links the name to the local landscape: a narrow valley through which a stream flows. The early mention refers to the inn; the explanation of the name based on the terrain is explicitly only a likelihood. This distinguishes a specific historical reference from a cautious explanation of the name’s origin.
The history of the present-day municipality of Podolanka also encompasses the stories of three formerly independent neighboring municipalities: Cvrčovice, Kostomlátky, and Podolanka. This broader perspective looks beyond the history of the individual place name to the history of all three municipalities.
Churches, Chapels, and Remembrance
In Cvrčovice is the protected church complex of Stětà sv. Jana Křtitele. It includes a Baroque entrance gate, a mortuary chapel, an enclosing wall, and several cemetery gravestones. Its features range from the entrance to the site to the cemetery memorials. Much of the municipality’s cultural heritage is in poor condition.
The Podolanka memorial to those who fell in the First World War commemorates seventeen residents of the municipality. It was unveiled on May 29, 1921. It provides a distinct focus for remembrance alongside the religious buildings, centering on the residents being commemorated and a specific date.
Two niche chapels built before 1680 stand along the II/610 state road in Podolanka. Výklenková kaple XXX is located beside a road on the western side of Podolanka. Výklenková kaple XXXII is located along the Podolanka–Dřevčice road, on the north side, beside the road toward Podolanka.
Routes and Information Board
The two niche chapels are part of the so-called Svatá cesta (VIA SANCTA), which leads from Prague to Stará Boleslav. Route 8196 is a separate cycling route: it passes through Podolanka and connects the village with Brandýs nad Labem. Check the cycling route’s path locally before setting out.
At RybnĂk Jordánek, an information board provides information from the beginnings to the present day, as well as fishing regulations. It combines a historical overview with specific rules for fishing. The information board thus complements the buildings and memorial sites with two more topics to consider when finding your way around.
