Jirny is a significant conservation area with a remarkable historic town center. The Church of St. Peter and Paul, the bell tower, the castle, and individual monuments give the town distinct historical landmarks. A nature trail also explores local history and nature. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the historic sites in the center, the chapel in the forest of Nové Jirny, and the castle, which is closed to the public.

Church and Local History

The Church of St. Peter and Paul stands on a rise in the center of town. Originally Gothic, it dates from the 14th century; it was first mentioned in 1350. These two dates describe different aspects: the 14th century places the church in its historical context, while 1350 is the year of its first mention. The church thus combines a clearly identifiable role in the town center with a history reaching back to the Middle Ages.

The bell tower by the church also has an older architectural history. It stands on the site of an earlier structure, first built of wood and later of stone. This earlier structure was Gothic and probably dates from the mid-14th century. The date is therefore a tentative estimate for the earlier structure, not an exact year of construction. Together, the church and bell tower show that the history of this area spans several architectural periods.

Castle, Statue, and Chapel

Jirny Castle was built in 1844–1847 on the remains of the Old Castle. It is described as a two-story building with a tower, gables, and battlements. The access restriction is important for visitors: the castle is closed to the public. Confirm access before planning a visit.

The statue of Saint Jude Thaddeus stands west of the church and is dated 1860. Until 1969, it stood at the crossroads toward Horoušany and Nové Jirny. After repeated damage, it was moved to the grounds of the Church of St. Peter and Paul. Its current location and its former position at the crossroads are therefore two different chapters in its history.

The Chapel of the Virgin Mary has a different connection to the area: it was built in 1914 in the forest of Nové Jirny, at a place called “V zadních dubinách.” While the Church of St. Peter and Paul stands in the town center, the chapel is in this forest area. The two buildings can therefore help you locate different settings in Jirny’s history, without treating them as one town center.

Nature Trail and Getting Your Bearings

During a visit in July 2023, the “Naučná jirenská stezka” nature trail was described as an approximately 1.5 km circular route. It starts and ends at the intersection of K Lesu and Navrátilova streets. The trail covers monuments, flora, archaeology, and fauna, bringing together cultural history and nature. Check before setting out whether the trail is still there; its condition and signage may also have changed. The current design of the information boards may likewise differ from the description provided.

Geographically, Jirny is situated on the road connecting Brandýs nad Labem–Stará Boleslav with Úvaly, and on the D11 highway between Prague and Hradec Králové. These road connections can help you get your bearings when planning a hotel stay in Jirny. Traffic and road conditions may change, so check them before you travel. Jirny’s main appeal as a destination is its historical focus: the town center and church, monuments with their own location histories, and the chapel in the forest, which is geographically separate from them.
