Hrušov can be explored through several historical and cultural themes. These include the history of the younger fortress, archaeological sites, the statue of St. John of Nepomuk and a described section of the red-marked Svatojakubská cesta. The themes are clearly distinct: dates put the fortress’s development in context, the cemetery focuses on archaeological findings, and the statue of St. John of Nepomuk combines figurative sculpture with its setting in the landscape.

Traces of the younger fortress

Hrušov was first mentioned in writing in 1346. The younger fortress near the Hrušov manor house was built in the 14th century; in 1501, it was given a new tower. The tower was blown up and completely demolished in 1959. These details concern different milestones: the first written mention refers to the settlement, the construction and renovation history to the fortress, and the destruction specifically to its tower.

Tvrziště Nad Čertůvkou is classified as a significant archaeological site in category UAN I. The relevant heritage register entry was updated on 10 August 2023. The old ramparts and ditches of a small fortress are located on a promontory above the Četůvka.

The Únětice culture cemetery

The Únětice culture cemetery is designated as an archaeological site in Hrušov. It lies on a river terrace on the right bank of the Jizera and was archaeologically investigated in the 1950s. The excavation examined nine stone-lined skeletal graves. This describes both the site’s setting and specific archaeological finds: the river terrace on the Jizera, its cultural attribution and the nine graves with their stone linings.

The statue of St. John of Nepomuk

The statue depicts the saint kneeling on stone clouds in front of a cross. A small angel brings him the cross, while a second angel emerges beside him. The scene thus includes several clearly recognizable motifs: the kneeling figure, the clouds and the two angels with the cross. The statue’s soft modeling and tranquil atmosphere are characteristic of late Baroque sculpture.

The statue stands in the fields, about 2 kilometers from Hrušov, along the route between Hrušov and Horky nad Jizerou. It is below a ridge with views of the Kokořínsko area and Vrátenská hora. This artwork thus brings together its specific depiction and its described landscape setting.

Hiking the Svatojakubská cesta

A 2024 tourism description features the red-marked hiking trail “Svatojakubská cesta” on the Krnsko–Písková Lhota–Hrušov section. The places named help identify the described route. Check the current trail markings on site before including the route in your plans.

Plan your stay around your interests

If you’re looking for a hotel in Hrušov, distinguishing between the themes can help organize your trip: the fortress offers a history of construction that can be dated, the cemetery provides specific archaeological findings, and the statue offers an art-historical perspective. The described hiking route offers a separate focus; check the current trail markings on site.
