Žerčice: Church History and Local Traditions
Accommodation in Žerčice
Several aspects of Žerčice stand side by side: its early mention in the Chronicle of Cosmas, the history of St. Nicholas Church, written records, and events organized by local associations. The village square, public green space, and an archaeological site also shape the character of the place. If you are looking for a hotel in Žerčice, these topics can provide different focal points for your stay. The bus stops served and current departures are also relevant to your planning.
Church history in several stages
Žerčice is attested in 1070 in the Chronicle of Cosmas. It mentions the consecration of a church at the new farmstead of Žerčiněves. St. Nicholas Church is attested as a parish church from 1384; at the time, it was still made of wood. Its present stone form dates from 1731, and it was consecrated on November 25. This sequence traces the story from an early mention of the place to specific dates in the church’s architectural history.
Chronicles and musical history
The history and lives of the inhabitants of Žerčice are recorded in twelve municipal chronicles. One of them was created on October 27, 1748: it was written on parchment in Schwabacher script and is considered the oldest in the Mladá Boleslav area. Alongside the written record is the history of music: the Baroque composer Samuel Capricornus was born in Žerčice on December 21, 1628. The chronicle and Capricornus offer different ways of approaching local history—through the recorded life of the community and through a biographical link to Baroque music.
Village character and archaeological landscape
A municipal plan from 2013 describes the village square, public green space, and small-scale architecture as features that convey the atmosphere of a historic settlement. The Žerčické mohyly site offers another perspective. It lies in a forest northwest of Žerčice and consists of two large burial mounds dating from prehistoric or early medieval times. The site has surface damage caused by several pits. The settlement landscape is thus complemented by an archaeological landscape and a past whose date has not been precisely determined.
Events organized by associations
TJ Žerčice holds an annual Shrovetide parade. The Žerčice Volunteer Fire Brigade has organized the Memoriál Josefa Hůlky firefighting sports competition since 2013. The details differ for planning purposes: the Shrovetide parade is an annual tradition, while the competition dates back to 2013. If you want to plan your trip around a future competition, check the event date locally in advance.
