Bykoš: Village History, Townscape and Landscape
Accommodation in Bykoš
Three themes are particularly important to understanding Bykoš: its historic village structure, archaeological traces from several periods, and the landscape in the Český kras area. There is also a seasonal offering at Dýňová farma Bykoš. For your travel planning, this makes it possible to distinguish the village’s history and landscape from a farm offering available only at certain times of year.
Landscape and Protected Area
The eastern half of the Bykoš municipal area lies in the southern part of the Český kras Protected Landscape Area. Protection zones II and III are located in the Bykoš cadastral area. Important viewpoints are found mainly in the northern part of the area. For travel planning, it is worth considering the protected-area connection and the viewpoints as two distinct aspects of the landscape.
Village Structure and History
Bykoš developed as an agricultural nucleated settlement with an elongated village green at a crossroads. The village green and crossroads provide concrete reference points for the historic village layout. The original urban structures have been preserved in the village layout and are to be conserved and protected. Thus, both the settlement’s origins and the preservation of its structure are part of the village’s history.
Bykoš was first mentioned in writing as early as 1170. Archaeological finds attest to Neolithic settlement from 5500 to 4300 BC; later sites date from the Bronze Age, the Early and Late Iron Ages, and the Roman period. The finds also include Linear Pottery, Stroked Pottery and stone tools. The archaeological evidence therefore reaches far back before the written mention. Together, these offer different perspectives on the village’s past: the written mention in 1170 and traces of human settlement from prehistoric and ancient periods.
Townscape and Farmsteads
The original character of Bykoš’s buildings has largely been preserved. A farmyard at the southern crossroads stands out among the village’s buildings. The entrance gates to the farmsteads are also notable features. These architectural details complement the broader settlement structure when viewing the townscape: the preserved character applies to the buildings as a whole, while the farmyard and gates provide specific accents in the townscape.
Seasonal Offering at Dýňová farma Bykoš
