These highlights offer different starting points for planning. Visiting the church requires a prior arrangement; cyclists can compare the two described circular routes, especially by length and route. Check current route conditions before setting off.

Church of St. Stephen: Building History and Historic Monument Ensemble

The Church of St. Stephen is listed as an immovable cultural monument in the Central List of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic. Its registration number is 26819/2-1723. The originally Gothic building dates from the second half of the 14th century and was remodelled in Baroque style in 1669 and 1709. A major restoration in 1897–1898 gave the church new painted decoration and furnishings. The sequence of its Gothic origins, two dated remodels and later restoration reveals several clearly distinct phases in the building’s history.

A presbytery with a ribbed vault survives from the Gothic building. The term describes a vault with intersecting ribs and provides an indication of the construction of this part of the building. The church contains restored Renaissance tombstones, one of which is set into the exterior wall. Thus, a surviving part of the Gothic building and Renaissance funerary monuments represent different historical layers of the church.

The protection covers more than the church building. The protected ensemble also includes the bell tower, two gate piers, the staircase and the enclosed plots within the grounds. This is a useful distinction when looking at the site: the monument designation covers an ensemble with several components, not just the church.

Tourists and visitors can visit the Church of St. Stephen by prior arrangement with a priest or Josef Pavlíček. Arrange your visit before you arrive. Benefit concerts are held regularly in the church and are well attended by the public; ticket proceeds go towards restoration work. If you would like to include a concert in your travel plans, check the dates in advance. The organ also connects the site with musical history: singer Ema Destinová supported it in 1912.

The Municipal Chronicle and a Glimpse into Local History

The history of the municipality offers a distinct perspective alongside the building’s history. The municipality has kept its chronicle continuously since 1921 and offers a glimpse into the first chronicle book, which covers the years 1921 to 1980. While this first volume records a clearly defined period, the municipal chronicle has continued since 1921. If you would like to plan a visit specifically to see it, check access arrangements in advance.

Compare Two Circular Cycling Routes by Length and Route

A 27.5-kilometre circular cycling route runs between Domousnice and Skyšice through Řitonice. The second route is 35 kilometres long and starts in Dolní Bousov. It is rated moderately difficult and runs partly along field and forest tracks and partly along lightly trafficked roads. The difference between the two route lengths is 7.5 kilometres. If distance is the deciding factor in your plans, the route through Řitonice is the shorter option; for the 35-kilometre route, the stated difficulty and variety of surface types are additional factors to consider. Check current conditions on the relevant route before setting off.
