Laza: Waterfall, High Mountains and Pastoral Life
Accommodation in Laza
Mucuq Waterfall and mountain scenery
Mucuq Waterfall is located near Laza in the Qabala District and the Qabala section of Shahdag National Park. It is 96 meters high and lies at an elevation of about 1,700 meters. Snow and rainwater from the Qotur Massif feed the waterfall. This natural attraction combines a considerable drop with a clearly identified water source.
The challenging Xınalıq–Laza route
The Xınalıq–Laza route is 42 kilometers long, involves 1,945 meters of ascent and 2,800 meters of descent, and reaches an elevation of 3,236 meters. It crosses high mountain ranges, deep valleys, and vast alpine meadows. The distance, ascent and descent, and highest elevation reached each provide different indications of the scale of the hike. The route is physically demanding: in addition to steep climbs, it includes several river crossings and difficult terrain in the Gudyalchay Valley. Weather and river conditions can affect the level of difficulty; take both into account when planning your hike.
The route follows old paths historically used by shepherds and traders between the high-altitude Caucasus pastures and the lowlands. This historical connection adds another perspective to the information about elevation and terrain.
Pastoral farming and the seasons
Sheep farming is part of the local livelihood in Laza; traditionally, residents move to winter pastures. Some residents spend the summer on high pastures in the Greater Caucasus, which reach about 3,000 meters. Salavat Pass remains a seasonal resting place for local shepherds. Together, these details paint a picture of livestock farming shaped by different grazing locations and seasons.
The route to Mucuq Waterfall
The approach to Mucuq Waterfall follows the left branch of the Demiraparan River. The route may also include Zayli Waterfall and a cave used by wildlife. For planning purposes, you can distinguish between the Xınalıq–Laza route and the access route to Mucuq Waterfall: they are two distinct scenic attractions around Laza.
Planning a winter trip
Travel to Laza becomes more difficult in winter. For planning purposes, this and the conditions on the Xınalıq–Laza route are two distinct considerations: weather and river conditions can affect the difficulty of the route. Check these conditions before setting out and take the season into account when planning your trip.
