Qabala Rayon is characterized by high mountains, green forests, rivers, lakes and waterfalls. The region also offers historical and cultural points of interest, from the ruins of the ancient city of Gabala to museums and the Udi community in Nic. If you are considering Qabala as a travel destination, its landscapes and history can provide two useful focal points for planning your trip.

Finding Your Way Between the Lake and the Ancient City

Lake Nohur, also known as the Nohurqışlaq Reservoir, lies three kilometers east of Gabala at an elevation of 700 meters. Aquaculture and rowing are promoted at the lake. If you are planning specific activities there, check their current availability locally.

Southwest of Gabala, the ruins of the ancient city of Gabala are located in Chukhur Gabala. The site covers 25 hectares and lies 15 kilometers from Gabala; you can explore it by car or on foot. The lake and the archaeological site therefore offer different geographical points of reference: the lake lies east of Gabala, and the ruins southwest of it.

Archaeology and Qabala’s History

More than 4,000 exhibits are on display at the Gabala Archaeological Center. The center includes an exhibition hall, an archaeological collection, a restoration laboratory and a conference room. Artifacts newly discovered during excavations are also displayed there after restoration. The exhibits may change.

The Qabala State Historical-Artistic Reserve and the Gabala Archaeological Center offer guided tours in Azerbaijani, Russian and English. Confirm the current arrangements before your trip. The Qabala History and Ethnography Museum offers another perspective on history: its 13,000 exhibits reflect Qabala’s 2,500-year history. The museum includes 13 exhibition halls as well as an outdoor area with ancient stone monuments. This lets you choose between archaeological finds and a broader historical collection.

Culture in Nic and Exhibitions

The village of Nic is home to a close-knit Udi community. It is also where Saint Mary Mother Alban Church is located; the church opened on November 7 after its restoration. The date is part of the opening announcement; no year is specified.

For art lovers, the Qabala State Art Gallery organizes exhibitions according to an event schedule. Since dates and programming may vary, check the current exhibition dates before planning your visit around them.

Landscapes, Wellness and Activities

The Yengice thermal springs in Qabala Rayon are incorporated into the balneotherapy programs of local health resorts. If this wellness focus is important to your travel decision, confirm the resorts’ current services.

The Tufandag Mountain Resort is another nearby destination, four kilometers from Gabala city center. It has twelve kilometers of ski slopes accessible by cable car. Hiking and cycling are offered in summer, and paragliding is also available. Summer activities are seasonal, and conditions and operations may change. Check the latest information before making plans.

Another attraction in its own right, Qəbələnd Amusement Park covers 16 hectares. Together with the museums, historic sites and surrounding landscapes, it offers a range of themes, without requiring you to fit every activity into a single trip.

Getting There and Practical Planning

The Baku–Qabala–Baku train service serves Qabala Railway Station. Departures and tickets may change; check with Azerbaijan Railways before your trip. For a visit to the Gabala Archaeological Center or the Qabala State Historical-Artistic Reserve, the guided tours offered in three languages can help you find your bearings. For the Art Gallery, exhibition dates are key, while the availability of seasonal activities at Tufandag is what matters.
