Sant Julià De Lòria: Church, Trails and Wine
Accommodation in Sant Julià De Lòria
At Celler Casa Beal, enjoy views across the entire parish of Sant Julià de Lòria. Wine, Romanesque church art and trails through forests and countryside give a stay here a variety of focal points. The destinations and routes below will help you plan your time around your own interests.
Church and culture in Sant Julià de Lòria
Sant Julià i Sant Germà is the parish’s most significant church and is used for religious activities every day. It is of Romanesque origin. Its massive square bell tower is particularly striking: the Lombard tower has three storeys and is built from regularly arranged stone blocks; arches and pilaster strips divide its masonry. The church was restored and remodelled in modern times.
Its furnishings include a carved Christ altarpiece and Baroque altarpieces of Sant Julià, the 18th-century Immaculata and Sant Germà. There are also two carved figures dating from the 12th century: the Virgin of Canòlic and the Virgin of Los Remedios. In May 2019, Marko Ivan Rupnik completed 200 square metres of mosaics in the church. A visit to Sant Julià i Sant Germà is also part of the Ronda Laurediana cultural route.
During a visit to Sant Serni de Nagol, the paintings, the building and the Gothic altarpiece are explained. Check availability and the schedule before you travel. Canòlich Day is another established cultural event in the annual calendar: it takes place every year on the last Saturday in May. Locals and visitors come together to pay their respects to the Virgin of Canòlich, the patron saint of Sant Julià de Lòria. Check the event details for the relevant year.
Hiking: short trails and longer circular routes
The Camí de la Senyoreta starts at the edge of Sant Julià de Lòria, heading towards Spain, and is marked with a wooden sign. The trail is 1,880 metres long, climbs 370 metres in elevation and is considered easy. It passes through Mediterranean woodland to a small clearing with views of Borda de Tolse. The trail continues uphill towards Juberri, crossing the Fontanelles and Esquiroles canals before reaching the Juberrussa path. After crossing the forest again, the route ends in Juberri. Check current signage and trail conditions before setting out.
A longer hiking option is the eight-kilometre Tomb Lauredià circular route, which leads to the villages of Auvinyà and Aixirivall. The medium-length option starts and ends at Plaça de la Germandat in the centre of Sant Julià de Lòria. It is listed as having 400 metres of ascent and 427 metres of descent. By comparison, the Camí de la Senyoreta is considerably shorter; its 370 metres of elevation gain are spread across the route described. Use the stated distance, elevation profile and difficulty rating to decide which trail best suits your plans.
Sant Julià Màgica is an interactive circular route that introduces children to the parish’s legend and natural surroundings. The trail passes through the forest to Roc de la Senyoreta and tells the legend at ten stops featuring games and figures. It is considered family-friendly and has a medium difficulty level; it is recommended for children aged seven and over. The circular route is listed as taking three hours. Take this time estimate and the recommended age into account when planning, and check the latest trail details before setting out.
More challenging activities and seasonal conditions
For a mountain-biking option, try the 11-kilometre Sant Julià de Lòria–Auvinyà circular route. It starts at the Sant Julià de Lòria Tourist Office on Av. Verge de Canòlich, at the beginning of Rabasa Road. It has 533 metres of elevation gain and is rated difficult. This makes it different from the easy Camí de la Senyoreta in both the type of activity and the difficulty rating. Check current route conditions before cycling.
The Som-Bosc trail is in the Canòlich forest in the parish of Sant Julià de Lòria. A reservation and guidebook are required; check the latest booking details in advance. In good weather, the trail is suitable from mid-spring through autumn. In winter, it is accessible in snowy conditions with suitable equipment, such as snowshoes or snowshoe boots, ski poles and warm clothing. Be sure to take the weather conditions into account. The seasonal guidance and equipment requirements set this trail apart from the hikes described with fixed distances and elevation figures.
