When planning a trip to Sasaj, two separate questions arise: What characterizes the coastal trail, and how can you reach Sasaj Beach? The hiking route can be understood through its sections and landscape; for the beach, its location off the SH8 and the bus connection are important reference points. Planning for both means you can consider the route and the journey separately.

The Southern Coastal Trail through Sasaj

The Southern Coastal Trail includes the Piqeras–Sasaj–Lavani Pass section and runs as a hiking route between these points. Through Sasaj, the route passes the HEC Sasaj hydroelectric power plant, turns into a gravel track, and then follows a pebble beach for 300 meters. This sequence combines a specific landmark with a change in surface and a coastal stretch. The 300 meters refers to the pebble beach section, not the total length of the trail. Check local trail conditions before hiking.

Hillside scenery and views

Another part of the coastal trail climbs along an old road on the mountainside. The road is partly paved and partly unpaved; along the way are terraced olive groves overgrown with ferns. On the way to Lukovë, a scenic coastal section runs alongside abandoned terraces. The landscape offers a contrast: on the hillside, the climb, changing surfaces and overgrown olive terraces shape the scenery; along the coastal section, the views and abandoned terraces stand out. Sasaj is considered a small coastal mountain village overlooking the olive groves of Piqeras. From Lukovë, a mountain path may offer views of the stone-built village of Sasaj on the mountainside. This possible view focuses on the village’s form, while the coastal trail highlights the landscape along the route.

Sasaj Beach and getting there

Sasaj Beach lies off the SH8 coastal road between Borsh and Lukovë; an access road leads toward the coast. A car is strongly recommended for visiting the beach: buses on the Saranda–Himara–Vlora route travel along the SH8 above it and do not stop at the beach. Before traveling, check current bus connections and the condition of the access road, as bus services and road conditions may change.

Different checks apply when preparing for each activity: for hiking, check local trail conditions; for a beach visit, check the route, bus connection and access road. This helps you match the guidance to your plans rather than treating it as general travel information.

Historical cultural connection

Labe polyphonic singing is associated with Sasaj as a historical local tradition. One specific historical reference is participation in a festival in 1978. This cultural connection adds another aspect of the area’s history to its landscape and hiking appeal.
