Discover Shkodër
Accommodation in Shkodër
Shkodër brings together numerous traces of the city’s history and its proximity to Lake Skadar. If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay here, first consider how you’d like to spend your time: exploring the castle, museums and historic streets, or enjoying nature and activities on the lake. The city is also widely known as the “City of Bicycles”; bicycles have been part of everyday life and urban culture for decades.
The city and Lake Skadar
The Albanian part of nearby Lake Skadar is designated as a managed nature reserve and has been listed as a Ramsar site since 2005. The lake offers opportunities for fishing, canoeing and kayaking, birdwatching, and walks along the shore. The Shiroka–Zogaj–Koplik route runs west and north of Shkodër around the lake. This puts urban cultural attractions and activities in nature side by side as different focuses for your stay.
The castle and archaeological traces
Rozafa Castle stands on a strategic hill at the entrance to Shkodër. Its history dates back to the Illyrian period; many building phases followed during the Roman, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman eras. From the castle, visitors can enjoy panoramic views over Lake Skadar. Inside the castle, the Castle Museum displays evidence of settlement in Shkodër from various historical periods.
Shkodra Archaeological Park lies at the southeastern entrance to the city. It preserves evidence of Illyrian, Roman and medieval settlement and fortifications. Its historical, archaeological and natural values make it another point of interest for anyone curious about Shkodër’s layered history.
Photography and the city’s history
The permanent exhibition at the Marubi National Museum of Photography is arranged into three themed rooms. Each is dedicated to a generation of the Marubi dynasty: Pietro Marubbi, Kel Marubi and Gegë Marubi. The archive contains 493,819 negatives, 246 letters and telegrams, and 219 cameras. The exhibition organizes its themes by generation; the Historical Museum of Shkodër takes a different approach, focusing on the city’s development.
The Historical Museum is housed in the monumental Oso Kuka building, a distinctive urban residence dating from the 19th century. Its collection includes archaeological, ethnographic, historical and artistic objects that illustrate Shkodër’s development. The Museum of Testimony and Memory documents the period of Albania’s communist totalitarian regime.
Historic streets and buildings
Gjuhadol is a historic quarter with cobbled lanes and Venetian-style buildings. Its main section is pedestrianized and includes small cafés, craft galleries and cultural spaces. Kole Idromeno Street is another distinctive streetscape: the cobbled pedestrian boulevard is lined with historic buildings in Venetian and Austro-Hungarian styles, as well as craft shops.
The Lead Mosque also offers a glimpse into the city’s architectural history. Built in 1773–1774, it is considered a representative example of Ottoman architecture in Albania. In 1948, it was declared a cultural monument for its outstanding historical and architectural value.
On foot, by bicycle and getting creative
The Shkodra City Tour is a leisurely guided walking tour designed to take about two to three hours. The tour is entirely on foot. Its duration and route details may change, so check the latest tour information if you’re planning your time around it.
Another nearby cultural monument is the Mesi Bridge, an Ottoman-era structure dating from the early 18th century. It connects the village of Mes with the historic city of Shkodër. The bridge is accessible by bicycle via quiet country roads; road conditions may change, so check them before setting out.
At the Venetian Mask Workshop in Shkodër, visitors can watch masks being made up close, using an old Venetian tradition. Creative workshops also offer the chance to paint your own mask. This adds a hands-on craft activity to visits to historic buildings and collections.
