Kukës by Lake Fierza: City History and Landscape
Accommodation in Kukës
Kukës lies on the shore of Lake Fierza and at the foot of Mount Gjallica. The city’s character is shaped by its waterside location, distinctive urban layout, and history, which can be traced through specific places and dates. The surrounding area also offers a range of options, from views of the landscape to hiking trails with clearly specified routes and durations.
Lake Fierza: Landscape and Urban Form
Lake Fierza and a park forest surround Kukës on three sides. Lake Fierza is considered Kukës’s main tourist attraction and offers impressive views. The city center is on the eastern side of the lakeshore; Kukës also has a lakeside promenade. The city has an elongated shape, like a peninsula. Together, the lake, park forest, and urban area provide clear orientation for the location.
The planned urban structure is also part of this picture: the plan for Kukës envisaged a rectangular street grid dividing the city into residential blocks. The street network connects Kukës with Tirana, Dibër, Tropojë, Mirditë, Shkodër, and Kosovo. If you are planning individual trips, check the current route and conditions, as these can change.
History and Cultural Heritage
New Kukës was built in less than ten years by the residents of Kukës. The foundation stones were laid on July 22, 1962. These two milestones connect the city’s beginnings with a specific starting point and the work of its residents.
The Ethnographic Museum of Kukës is located in the city center and is divided into three pavilions: Biodiversity, Archaeology, and Ethnography. The city’s ethnographic heritage includes traditional clothing, songs, dances, and musical instruments. The museum is accessible on foot and by vehicle; visitor regulations may change. Check the latest information before your visit.
Beneath the city is a tunnel complex that extends about 30 meters deep and was built between 1979 and 1992. The underground tunnels are considered evidence of Albania’s Cold War era.
The Kosovo Exodus Memorial was built in 2009 by former Kosovar refugees to mark the tenth anniversary of their return from exile. It includes a kind of replica of a fortified tower, a kulla, intended to symbolize Albanian hospitality and determination.
Bridge, Waterfalls, and Hiking Trails
The Great Bridge of Kukës offers views of the Black Drin and Lake Fierza and is a good place for photography. Another landscape feature is the Shkalla e Keqe gorge: it is a natural monument, about 1,000 meters deep and 3 meters wide at its narrowest point. It may be visible to the naked eye from the city center; visibility can vary.
Beleve Waterfall is about 14 kilometers from Kukës. A path approximately 180 meters long leads from the main road to the waterfall. For comparison, the Path of Colors runs for about 18 kilometers in the wider region between Shishtavec and the Korab Plateau; the hike usually takes 6 to 7 hours. This gives you the option of a short walk to the waterfall or a considerably longer hike, depending on your schedule. Trail and road conditions can change; check them before setting out.
In the wider area, a hiking route connecting Bele Waterfall, Zbinec, and Zbinec Pass was also opened as part of a 2023 project. It should not be confused with the route to Beleve Waterfall. Green Path agritourism is located 4 kilometers from Kukës and combines nature, aquaculture, and traditional cuisine. Individual offerings may change, so check what is currently available in advance.
Regional Cuisine
Traditional cuisine in the Kukës region includes flija, raki, honey, and homemade dairy products. This selection includes both regional layered pastries and drinks and dairy products. It adds a culinary tradition to the picture of the city, extending beyond its sights and trails.
When planning your time, the main highlights are easy to distinguish: the museum, tunnels, and memorial offer a chance to explore history and cultural heritage, while the lake, bridge, gorge, and waterfalls turn your attention to the landscape and nature. The distance and duration information for the trails helps you distinguish short routes from a longer hike.
