Elbasan County: Via Egnatia, Cultural Heritage and Nature
Accommodation in Elbasan County
Elbasan County offers a variety of reasons to visit: traces of the Via Egnatia, historic buildings, living traditions, as well as lakes, mountains and thermal springs. The city of Elbasan lies in the Shkumbin Valley and was historically an important link between northern and southern Albania. When planning your trip, it is worth considering your priorities: cultural sites in the city, archaeological sites along the Via Egnatia, or nature and wellness experiences elsewhere in the region.
The Via Egnatia and Archaeological Traces
The Via Egnatia ran through the present-day area of the Municipality of Elbasan and connected strategic and commercial locations that visitors can explore. Routes along it can be travelled on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike. Individual sections and their conditions may change, so check them before setting out. The Roman station Ad Quintum in Bradashesh was a rest stop and horse-changing point on the Via Egnatia.
Ad Quintum includes the ruins of a Roman bath complex. Its sequence of rooms included cold, warm and hot rooms, as well as a changing room; the complex also had underfloor heating and a nymphaeum. The Basilica of Bezistanit offers a glimpse into late antique architecture: it dates from the late fifth to early sixth century and contains wall paintings and floor mosaics. The Basilica of Tepes is set among olive groves near Elbasan and is associated with the ancient cemetery of Scampis. It served as a cemetery church for Roman soldiers before collapsing in an earthquake in the sixth century.
The Castle, Churches and Museums
Elbasan Castle is designated as a museum area and hosts cultural events, exhibitions and festivals related to local cultural identity. The programme may change. Within the castle grounds are the King Mosque, the Orthodox Church of St. Mary, the Clock Tower and Sinan Pasha’s Hammam. Together, these buildings offer several distinct cultural points of interest.
Elbasan’s Ethnographic Museum is housed in the 18th-century Sejdin House, a Category I cultural monument near the Bezistan plain. It showcases around 80 types of traditional crafts from Elbasan. Sacred buildings elsewhere also tell stories of different eras: the Church of Saint Kolli in Shelcan is considered a representative example of 16th-century Albanian iconography and is associated with the Onufri tradition. West of Elbasan lies the Church and Monastery of Saint John Vladimir, a three-aisled basilica with some late frescoes still preserved. Access conditions may vary.
The Early Christian Basilica in Elbasan is a designated cultural monument and a protected archaeological site. Its surviving traces include masonry foundations, columns and fragments of floor mosaics dating to the first centuries of Christianity. Together with the dating of the Basilica of Bezistanit, it illustrates the variety of Early Christian and Late Antique remains in Elbasan.
Traditions and Nature Experiences
Dita e Verës is Elbasan’s major traditional festival, with ancient pagan roots. Activities include concerts, as well as cultural, craft and fair-style offerings; the programme may vary from one edition to another. Ballokum is also closely associated with Elbasan’s traditions: this pastry is part of the local cuisine and is especially associated with Summer Day. The Funar Festival focuses on active nature tourism and local hospitality. Dates and the programme may vary from year to year.
In Funar, four lakes or reservoirs lie among pine and oak forests. Fishing is one of the activities available to visitors; the lakes also offer opportunities for kayaking and canoeing. Water sports offerings may change. For a different kind of nature excursion, Gjinar is known for mountain biking, though suitability depends on the season. Mount Bukaniku is a designated hiking destination. Gjinar can be reached via the Elbasan–Gjinar road; road conditions may change.
The natural thermal springs in Tregan were already in use during Roman times. At the Elbasan thermal baths, visitors can enjoy thermal baths, mineral mud treatments, physiotherapy and wellness resort services. The specific offerings may change. When searching for a hotel in Elbasan County, these different interests can help with your planning: the city’s history and museums, archaeological sites, nature activities or thermal experiences. Choose accommodation based on the places you plan to visit.
