On the Adriatic coast of Durrës County, days at the beach go hand in hand with archaeological and cultural destinations. Durrës offers a long coastline and historic sites in the modern city centre; at Cape Rodon, cliffs, nature experiences and a fortress shape the visit. In Krujë, the castle, museums and bazaar offer further insights into history. When choosing a hotel, it helps to first weigh up which experiences you want to define your stay.

Beach and seafront in Durrës

The coastline of Durrës Beach is approximately 10.5 kilometres long. You can swim, enjoy water activities, take long walks along the shore or relax in the sun. The water is shallow and slopes gently, making the beach suitable for children too. Water sports on offer include jet skiing, boat trips, parasailing and volleyball. Activities and providers may vary by season.

Kallmi Beach is also associated with beach tourism and relaxation in the sun and by the sea. Along the Durrës seafront, restaurants and cafés serve fresh fish and Mediterranean cuisine; individual establishments may change. This makes it possible to combine a beach stay with dining by the sea, without viewing the coast solely as a place for swimming.

Cape Rodon: Nature and fortress

Cape Rodon and its cliffs are classified as a Category III natural monument and are associated with nature tourism. Activities include beach visits, nature walks and hiking. Relaxing by the sea and panoramic photography are also among the options. This gives the cape a different focus from the beach and seafront setting in Durrës: here, the cliffs and nature take centre stage.

The historical heritage of the cape includes Rodon Castle. It was built in the 15th century on Skanderbeg’s orders and can be explored as a historic fortification. Those who want to combine nature and history will find both as distinct aspects of a visit: the cape’s landscape and the history of the fortress.

Archaeological history in Durrës

The Archaeological Park of Durrës is an important historical and archaeological centre in the coastal city. The city’s origins are traced back to Greek colonists in the 7th century BC; in Roman times it was known as Dyrrachium. The park includes the Amphitheatre of Durrës, the Arapaj Mosaic and Roman baths. It also features Byzantine and Venetian walls, as well as the ruins of temples, basilicas and houses.

The park is in the centre of the modern city and close to the sea. It is a place to explore the Illyrian, Greek and Roman heritage. The old town and the underground area of Durrës are also classified as a protected museum city and are associated with historical and archaeological tourism.

The Archaeological Museum of Durrës is Albania’s largest and most important archaeological institution and a cultural destination for local and international visitors. It is close to the seafront promenade, the 6th-century Byzantine wall and the city’s main historic sites. The museum displays more than 3,000 artefacts reflecting the city’s life, worship and art across 2,000 years of history. Exhibits may change during restoration work. The Great Mosque of Durrës is also a cultural site for visitors interested in Muslim heritage and the city’s layered history.

Castle, museums and bazaar in Krujë

Krujë Castle was built in the 5th and 6th centuries and has nine defensive towers. Within the castle walls, the Skanderbeg Museum presents the life and activities of Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu. On display are historical objects, illustrations and weapons, as well as materials about the resistance against the Ottoman Empire.

The Krujë Ethnographic Museum is housed in the Toptani family home, built in 1764, and preserves original elements of Ottoman architecture. Its approximately 1,000 authentic objects illustrate traditional life, customs, crafts and local artisan work; the items on display may change. The Old Bazaar combines craft shops with traditional Albanian dishes, local products and typical drinks. This makes Krujë a different focus for a visit than Durrës: here, the emphasis is on the history of the castle and museums, as well as crafts and local products, while Durrës brings together beaches and archaeology.

Choosing the right hotel location

If beaches and coastal experiences are to shape your stay, the destinations in Durrës described above can serve as a guide. If your plans focus mainly on the castle, museums and bazaar, look to the destinations in Krujë. When choosing, check the stated hotel location in relation to the sights you plan to visit rather than deciding solely by the name of the region.
