Stensved: Nature Trails and Radar History
Accommodation in Stensved
Stensved offers a range of things to explore during a stay: a meltwater gorge with waterfalls, nature trails near Stensbygård and the history of a former radar station. If you are considering Stensved as a destination, these highlights can help you decide which outings interest you. Mallings Kløft is defined by its gorge, water and course; the trails near Stensbygård by their landscapes. The radar station can be placed in context by its opening and closure dates. The archaeological site Kong Valdemars Jagtslot is also located along the trails by Stensby Møllebæk.
Mallings Kløft: Gorge and Water
Mallings Kløft is a meltwater gorge with several waterfalls. A walk heads south along the approximately one-kilometre-long gorge by Stensby Møllebæk. The length refers to the gorge itself; the walk follows its course. The gorge, waterfalls and stream provide concrete points of reference for understanding this natural attraction.
The walk through Mallings Kløft starts at the car park by Stensby Møllebæk on Stensbyvej. For orientation, you can use this named starting point and the gorge’s southerly course. Mallings Kløft is private property. The route description states that access is from 6 a.m. until sunset; check the signs on site before visiting.
Nature Trails, Stream and Archaeological Site
There are four nature trails at Stensbygård. They run alongside the farm’s fields, through its woods and along Stensby Møllebæk; the coast of South Zealand marks their endpoint. The landscapes described therefore range from the farm’s fields and woods to the stream and the coast. This distinguishes these trails from the single walk in Mallings Kløft, which focuses on the gorge.
The trails by Stensby Møllebæk pass a meadow containing the archaeological site Kong Valdemars Jagtslot. The Jagtslot itself is a small medieval earthwork fortification in a meadow by the stream. The name may bring a castle to mind; more precisely, it is a small earthwork fortification. Anyone interested in historical traces as well as the landscape will find here a connection between the stream, meadow and medieval archaeological site.
Stensbygård is also located on the Herregårdscykelruten. This means that, in addition to the four nature trails, a cycle route is also connected with the area. For your planning, this offers another point of reference if you are interested in the routes around Stensbygård.
Radar Station and Barracks
The radar station in Skovhuse near Stensved opened in 1954. A small barracks for guards and radar operators was built in Stensved in 1954–1955. The station and barracks are part of Stensved’s Cold War history.
The radar station was decommissioned in 2004. Its history can therefore be traced through its start of operations and its later closure. This historical subject differs from the nature trails: the station is chiefly defined by its function and place in time, while Mallings Kløft and the trails near Stensbygård are described in terms of their routes, stream and landscapes. These are distinct, specifically named highlights to help you choose between nature and history.
