Discover Hørve: Railway, Church and Landscape
Accommodation in Hørve
Those considering Hørve as a destination for a stay will find several distinct points of interest: railway and ferry history at the station, dated works of art in the church, and Cloverleaf Trail walks with different landscape and local-history connections. Depending on whether you are more interested in transport history, church art or paths through the landscape, Hørve offers different highlights.
Getting here and transport history
Hørve Station is on the Odsherredsbanen railway line. From there, you can continue by train to Asnæs, Fårevejle, Holbæk and Nykøbing Sj., among other destinations. Check the current timetable before travelling. The Odsherreds Transport Museum is also located at the station, in a former warehouse. To get to the museum, you can take Lokaltog on line 510R of the Odsherredsbanen railway to Hørve.
The Odsherreds Transport Museum displays ship models from the collection of Aksel Valentin Petersen. These include the DSB ferry Strib (1901–1935) and the ferry Marie. The two names give the history of transport a specific connection to ferry services; at the same time, the dates for Strib bring a particular historical example to mind. The selection on display may change. When planning a trip, you can link the museum with the railway theme, although they tell different stories: the railway is a point of reference for continuing your journey, while the models focus on ships and ferries.
The church and historical connections to the town
Hørve Church dates from around 1100. Its notable works of art include well-preserved post-Reformation frescoes from 1564, painted in the medieval style. Their date and style therefore point to different periods: the frescoes were created after the Reformation but draw on a medieval style. Another dated detail is the altarpiece from 1630, which bears the monogram of Christian IV. Taken together, these details form a timeline from the church’s construction through the wall paintings to the altarpiece, rather than assigning the church to just one century.
Cloverleaf Trails: landscape and local history
One Cloverleaf Trail walk follows the old coastline towards Lammefjord. There, the Land Canal encircles the entire drained Lammefjord, creating an attractive setting with opportunities to experience nature. Along one Cloverleaf Trail route, grey herons are often seen standing among the reeds on the opposite bank, while Eurasian coots swim there. The landscape impressions described are therefore distinct: on one side are the coastline, canal and drained fjord; on the other, wildlife along the shore.
Another Cloverleaf Trail walk passes through hilly terrain dotted with numerous ancient burial mounds. This offers a different landscape connection from the coastline, bringing together hills and historic burial mounds. The town’s history can also be explored on a walk. One Cloverleaf Trail walk passes through the part of Hørve that developed rapidly after the Odsherredsbanen railway was built; the railway connected Vejleby with Hørve. Another passes through old Hørve, where the church and village pond were located in the historic village centre. These two connections bring out a difference in time: the development associated with the railway on the one hand, and the older village centre with its church and village pond on the other.
