Avdebo is a landscape whose history is linked to the drainage of the Lammefjord. The Audebo Pumping Station, the Avdebodæmningen and a memorial stone present this subject from different perspectives. The Avdebo Plantation also stands out distinctly in the very flat surroundings. You can therefore choose your destination based on whether you are more interested in the history of the Lammefjord, the dike or the landscape.

Getting there and local profile

Regional bus route 560 runs between Holbæk and Nykøbing Sjælland and stops in Avdebo. If you plan to use this service to get there, check the current route before travelling. Avdebo also has a holiday-home area. Holiday homes and hotels are different types of accommodation that you can consider separately when choosing where to stay.

Pumping station and dike

The Audebo Pumping Station dates from 1874 and today also serves as a visitor centre and an interpretation site for the history of the Lammefjord. If you are heading to the station, check the current signposting on site. Groups can visit by prior arrangement with the site manager; make arrangements before your visit.

The Lammefjord dike system, including the pumping station at Audebo, is designated as a cultural environment. This includes the grass- and stone-covered dike, the pumping station buildings, and the canals and their outlets into the fjord. The designation thus brings landscape features and technical structures together in a shared context.

The Avdebodæmningen is 2.4 km long. A cycle path was laid along the top of the dike in 2012; a memorial stone at the Avdebodæmningen shows the various stages of the Lammefjord drainage project. The length, the year and the memorial stone answer different questions: how far the dike extends, when the cycle path was laid and which stages the drainage project went through. For your plans, these offer two distinct points of interest: the cycle path for a bike ride and the memorial stone for the history of the drainage works.

Landscape and regional context

The privately owned Avdebo Plantation covers around 200 ha and was established during the Second World War at the southeastern end of the drained Lammefjord. It stands out distinctly in the very flat landscape. Its appearance can be understood in contrast with the flat surroundings. The plantation also differs from the pumping station in age: the station dates from 1874, while the plantation was established during the Second World War. These represent different historical periods.

In the wider regional context, the entire geographical area of Odsherred is designated a UNESCO Global Geopark. One reason for this is the Lammefjord's decisive cultural and historical importance to life in the region following its enclosure by dikes. This places the history of the dike and pumping station in a regional context that extends beyond the individual structures.
