Tølløse: Forest, cycling route and historic traces
Accommodation in Tølløse
When looking for a hotel in Tølløse, it is worth first deciding what you want to focus on during your trip. Nature, cycling, architectural and railway history, and a music festival offer different perspectives on the town. Once you know which theme you want to shape your stay, you can incorporate the following highlights into your travel plans more purposefully.
Forest and open natural areas
Tølløse Skov, also known as Nederskoven, brings together old and new broadleaf woodland and coniferous forest in a manor-house landscape. Part of the forest is home to a school forest where you can learn about the individual trees. Tølløse’s natural setting therefore offers both mixed woodland and a specific opportunity to learn about individual trees. If you are focusing on landscape and plants, you will find two different points of interest here: the forest and the chance to look at individual trees.
Tølløse Fælled also has its own distinctive natural character. Some areas are deliberately left to nature; these include long grassland, a wetland and wildflowers. These areas create better conditions for bees, butterflies and other wildlife. Tølløse Skov also has a fenced dog exercise area where dogs are allowed off the leash. For travellers with a dog, this is a practical consideration when planning a trip.
Cycling by Tølløse Fælled
If you include cycling in your travel plans, you can distinguish between the route as a whole and its local connection: the Istidsruten is 280 kilometres long and passes Tølløse Fælled on the cycle path along Kvarmløsevej. The length refers to the route as a whole; its passage by the Fælled provides a specific connection to the area. This lets you link cycling with one of Tølløse’s named landscape features.
Railway history and architecture
Tølløse developed as a railway town around a station established in 1874 on the Nordvestbanen. The railway line runs between Kalundborg, Holbæk and Roskilde. Tølløse’s railway heritage also includes a station building erected in 1875. The dates mark two distinct stages: the opening of the station and, a year later, the construction of the building.
Tølløsegård is a medieval manor house in the settlement now known as Gammel Tølløse. In 1575, its owner at the time, Peder Oxe, had a new main building constructed. It consisted of two connected houses, each with its own gables and roofs, and was designed in the Dutch Renaissance style. The medieval designation applies to the manor house, while the main building represents a specifically dated phase of construction. Of the original moat system that surrounded the estate, the southern section remains; it is about 150 metres long.
The Tølløse Festival
Tølløse has its own music festival, called Tølløse Festival. It offers music, entertainment and activities for the whole family and is run by local volunteers. Local involvement, as well as the programme, is therefore part of the festival’s character. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the dates for your preferred travel period in advance.
