Oksbøl offers a range of travel experiences: open landscapes, the history of the former refugee camp, and a variety of museums and leisure activities. Deciding what you would like to focus on during your stay is a helpful starting point for planning your trip.

Landscapes and nature around Oksbøl

Oksbøl and the surrounding area are home to vast open heathlands, dune plantations and wide sandy beaches. If you enjoy spending time outdoors, there are opportunities for hiking and cycling through scenic surroundings. Nature experiences range from the coastal landscape to the forests and open areas of the Oksbøl Red Deer Reserve.

The Red Deer Reserve combines forests and open expanses, providing favourable living conditions for red deer. Red deer also graze in meadows below the lake in the area around Grærup Langsø. Conditions for wildlife watching vary by season. Nearby Grærup Fiskesø consists of a larger lake covering 6.5 hectares and a smaller lake.

There is a mountain biking trail in the Bordrup-Oksby Dune Plantation, near Oksbøl. Temporary access restrictions may apply, so check the conditions in advance. This lets you include nature experiences and exercise in your plans without tying them to a specific walking or cycling time.

History and culture

The FLUGT Museum in Oksbøl tells the story of the largest refugee influx Denmark has ever received. Its permanent exhibitions include “Flygtningelejr Oksbøl”. As an outdoor experience, FLUGT also offers a visit to the refugee cemetery.

FLUGT’s audio tour follows the original roads and paths of the former refugee camp. It takes you back to 1946, when a refugee camp stood at this site in Aal Plantage. A walk in Aal Plantage in Oksbøl passes a few remaining buildings from the former camp. This offers different ways to explore its history: through the exhibition, the audio tour and a walk around the site.

Aal Kirke in Oksbøl offers another aspect of a cultural visit. It houses some of Denmark’s largest Romanesque frescoes; its Romanesque Battle of the Horsemen frieze is often compared to the Bayeux Tapestry. At the Panser- & Artillerimuseum, you can see tanks and cannons up close. The permanent exhibition “Army Wheeled Vehicles” also lets visitors climb into an armoured personnel carrier.

FLUGT’s café offers its own distinctive experience: it serves dishes inspired by the food cultures that refugees from around the world have brought to Denmark.

Leisure activities

SportsPark Blaavandshuk in Oksbøl offers heated pools, a sauna, an infrared sauna and whirlpools. It also features an inflatable water obstacle course, which is included in the standard admission price. The swimming and water park also has tall, long water slides. Junglefun Klatrepark has nine climbing courses of increasing difficulty. Junglefun also offers an indoor course for BowCombat. Operating and booking details may change, so check this information before planning your visit.

Parkgolf Blåvandshuk offers two loops, each with nine holes and a length of 500 metres. If you are interested in escape rooms, you can find Escape History House at Baunhøjvej 38 in Oksbøl. The rooms are inspired by real historical events.

SportsPark, Parkgolf and Junglefun add leisure and activity options. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay in Oksbøl, first consider what matters most for your trip.
