Højer lies on a rise at the edge of the marsh, behind the outermost dikes. If you are looking for a hotel in Højer, the landscape, local history and walking trails offer concrete clues to which aspects of the area you might want to explore during your stay. The low-lying marshland to the south and west shapes the view, along with the historic buildings and paths through the Tøndermarsken.

Marshland views and observation towers

From Højer’s elevated edge, the view stretches across the marsh to the south and west. Højer Water Tower offers another vantage point: its 34-metre spiral staircase leads to an observation platform. On a clear day, you can see the marshland, the Wadden Sea, Sylt and Rømø from there. Clear conditions are essential: in particular, the islands are only visible when the weather is clear.

Nearby, the observation tower at Vidåslusen can be reached via an outdoor staircase. From the top of the lock tower, there are views across Margrethe Kog and the Wadden Sea. Vidåslusen is also known as a place to spot white-tailed eagles. In Højer, signs point the way to Vidåslusen. The viewpoints offer different perspectives: on a clear day, the water tower affords views of Sylt and Rømø, while the lock tower looks out over Margrethe Kog and the Wadden Sea.

The Marsh Trail through Højer

The 54-kilometre Marsh Trail runs through Tøndermarsken and Højer. The European Ramblers Association has certified it as a “Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe.” Its route links several named places: it starts at Højer Mølle, passes Højer Pumping Station and continues to Højer Harbour and Højer Sluice, before leading back to Højer. At this length, the Marsh Trail is an extended walking route rather than a short stroll around town.

The sequence of stops is also useful for planning: the mill is the starting point, the harbour and pumping station are along the route, and Højer Sluice is another stop along the way. The old Højer Sluice is still preserved. The trail thus connects the landscape with individual landmarks, even though not all the sights offer the same kind of visit.

The mill, town centre and church history

The Dutch-style windmill Højer Mølle dates from 1857. At 22 metres tall, it is one of the highest windmills in Northern Europe. The historic district also defines the area: it is well preserved, with narrow streets and several listed buildings. Together, the mill and town centre represent different scales of architectural history—from a prominent standalone building to a network of streets with older buildings.

The history of Højer Church probably dates back to around 1100; its oldest part is believed to date from that time. The transepts, tower and porch were probably added in the 15th century. Store Spiker, the granary by Højer Mølle, offers another insight into the landscape and life in the marsh. Across its three floors, it explains the geography of Tøndermarsken and the distinctive lives of people and birds in the marsh.

Oysters, trade and events

Højer’s history also connects the area with trade and oysters. Højer was founded in the Middle Ages and early on served as a port of call for merchant ships and oyster fishers. From 1759, oyster harvesting was managed at the oyster warehouse at Kiers Gaard. The listed marsh farm is a four-winged farm complex dating from the same year. Oysters from Højer were exported as far as the court of Catherine the Great of Russia—a historic trade route linking the town with a faraway destination.

The events calendar also offers a specific seasonal highlight: a sheep market is held in Højer every year in early September. Smag på Marsken is part of the town festival programme. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the dates for your travel period.
