There are several ways to shape a trip to Tønder Municipality: explore marshland paths, historic buildings, museums, festivals and nature experiences on Rømø. Tøndermarsken is Denmark’s largest marshland area. People have shaped the landscape by living and working with and against the water. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether hiking, culture or a particular event date is the main reason for your trip.

Marshland, paths and birdlife

The 54-kilometre-long Marskstien trail runs through Tøndermarsken. The route passes dikes and pumping stations and crosses extensive marshland, canals and lakes with remarkable natural features and birdlife. In addition to this hiking trail, there are eight shorter routes to choose from. This lets you choose between a longer route and shorter alternatives, without a specific walking time being given for the latter. A digital map for National Cycle Route 1, “The West Coast Route,” is available in connection with Tøndermarsken. The Royal Marsh Trail is also connected to Tøndermarsken as a panoramic route.

Tøndermarsken is a cultural landscape with internationally significant birdlife. Parts of the marsh are included in a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nørresø has abundant birdlife, and you may also be able to spot a white-tailed eagle there. The lake was created as a spawning area for the snæbel, one of the world’s most endangered fish. The landscape, birdwatching and nature conservation highlight different aspects of the marsh, rather than focusing on just one hiking route.

Mills, museums and architecture

Højer Mill is a Dutch-style windmill dating from 1857. It serves as a museum and is part of the area’s well-preserved cultural heritage. Its exhibitions explore Tøndermarsken. At the interactive KlimaLab, you can find out how seawater and backwater are managed in the marsh. Hiking trails and paths lead from the mill to other nature experiences; it also serves as a starting point for visits to Tøndermarsken and the Wadden Sea National Park. The mill also offers homemade pastries and fruit from the mill garden, which are used, among other things, in sønderjyske brødtort.

Drøhses Hus is a well-preserved Baroque house dating from 1672. Its exhibitions cover Tønder lace and, at times, local crafts. The building also houses the Rømø-Tønder Tourist Office and can be visited free of charge. Kunstmuseet i Tønder presents changing exhibitions of Danish and Nordic art from the 20th and 21st centuries. Kulturhistorie Tønder features, among other things, bobbin lace, Schleswig-Holstein faience and Dutch tiles.

From 1 September 2026, Kunstmuseet i Tønder and Kulturhistorie Tønder were scheduled to close for approximately two years as part of a comprehensive modernisation. Check current access to both venues before visiting.

Schackenborg, the festival and Rømø

Historical guided tours of the castle rooms are offered at Schackenborg Castle. They explore stories from more than four centuries of South Jutland history. The royal castle garden is open daily from 10 am to 4 pm for independent walks along the avenue and smaller paths. Opening hours may change, so check them before your visit. Schackenborg Castle also offers lunch made with local ingredients and breakfast featuring sønderjysk delicacies; menus may change.

The Tønder Festival takes place every year on the last weekend of August. Folk, roots rock, country, blues, Cajun, world and other music take centre stage. Spontaneous jam sessions accompany the major concerts. The programme and exact dates vary from year to year. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant year.

On Rømø, Naturcenter Tønnisgård offers guided activities focused on nature and culture, including experiences in a Second World War bunker. Lakolk Beach is one of Europe’s widest sandy beaches, with good swimming opportunities and chances to surf the North Sea waves. These attractions are quite different from the marshland paths and historic houses, and could shape the focus of your trip.

Find a hotel for your trip

When looking for a hotel in Tønder Municipality, it helps to have a specific reason for your trip: would you like to spend time on hiking trails and in the marshland, explore museums and historic buildings, attend the festival, or experience nature and the beach on Rømø? First decide which of these interests you want to shape your stay. You can then choose hotels to suit your travel needs.
