Discover Mommark by the Sea
Accommodation in Mommark
Mommark brings together several different travel interests: a sandy beach by the marina, a varied section of the Alsstien and opportunities to experience the coast from the water. You can explore the area through its landscape and beach stays, as well as water sports, fishing, cuisine and transport history.
Coastal landscape and beach
The section of the Alsstien between Fynshav and Mommark offers impressive views across the Lillebælt towards Fyn and Ærø. It passes through fields, alongside hedgerows, through woodland and past the beach. This succession brings together open spaces and stretches of path bordered by vegetation with the coastline; the views across the Lillebælt add the islands opposite to this changing landscape. If, when choosing a destination, you would like to consider a route offering varied landscape as well as a beach, this part of the Alsstien is a clear option.
Mommark Beach is located at Mommark Marina on Sydals and is a sandy beach with a bathing jetty and Blue Flag status. Visitors who are not staying at the marina’s campsite may also use the beach. The beach therefore offers a different focus from the Alsstien: here, the sand and bathing jetty take centre stage, while the Alsstien features a succession of landscapes and views across the Lillebælt.
Enjoy the water and go fishing
At Mommark Marina, visitors can rent six sea kayaks and four SUP boards. A paddle trip from Mommark offers the chance to experience marine nature and birdlife in a Natura 2000 area around the southern part of the holiday island of Als. Fishing is also possible south of the town, where the water gets deep close to shore. The ship “Rasmus”, based in Mommark, is a former lobster trawler and is used mainly for fishing trips. If you are considering a trip on the “Rasmus”, check the latest information, as details of its operation may change. The activities differ in focus: paddling is connected with experiencing nature, while fishing focuses on the location or a trip by boat.
Fish dishes and smoked specialities
M|M Seaside Bistro serves homemade food and house-smoked specialities from its own smokehouse, as well as fresh fish dishes with a sea view. “Smagen af Mommark” is also the name of an offering that includes smoked goods from its own smokehouse: smoked salmon in various varieties, smoked pork tenderloin, aged bacon from Grambogård Dyrevelfærds-gris, and deli salads. This gives you specific pointers to Mommark’s culinary offerings when choosing a destination: fish dishes at the bistro and a named selection of smoked goods and salads.
The town’s transport history
Mommark’s transport history includes two different connections. The ferry terminal’s heyday was as the terminus of the Sønderborg–Mommark railway from 1933 to 1962. The ferry service from Mommark to Søby on Ærø was discontinued in 2009. The railway and ferry are separate chapters in the town’s history: the years given mark the heyday of the railway connection and the end of the ferry service, respectively, not the same event.
