In Havnbjerg, architectural and commemorative history meet practical routes for cycling and hiking. Havnbjerg Mølle and Havnbjerg Kirke offer different historical themes: at the mill, the focus is on its design, year of construction and protection history; at the church, Romanesque architecture is joined by a painting and war graves. For your stay, you can therefore choose between cultural sites, a clearly measured cycling tour and a church-themed walking route.

Havnbjerg Mølle: construction history and preservation

Havnbjerg Mølle is a Dutch-type windmill with a thatched roof, built in 1835. The type of mill, the thatched roof and the year of construction give the building a distinctive character. In 1964, the mill was listed for protection because it was considered particularly worthy of preservation. Since 1969, the Fabrikant Mads Clausens Fond has been responsible for its maintenance and museum operations. The mill therefore offers three distinct points to consider: its construction, its later protection status, and responsibility for its upkeep and museum operations. If you are planning a museum visit, check current visiting options in advance.

Romanesque church and places of remembrance

Havnbjerg Kirke is Romanesque and was built of fieldstones around 1140. The 15-metre-high tower with its spire was added in 1857; the church and tower therefore date from different construction phases. The altarpiece contains a painting by C.W. Eckersberg depicting Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. The churchyard contains war graves from 1848 and 1864. Architecture, art and remembrance offer different perspectives: you can focus on the Romanesque origins, the tower added later, the painting or the two dates associated with the graves.

Cycling, woodland and hiking

The Havnbjerg Strand cycling route starts at Havnbjerg Centret and is 11 km long. It passes through woodland and along the beach. Its starting point and length provide a clear framework for planning the ride, while its description names two distinct landscape features along the way. As route information may be revised, it is worth checking the current description before setting out.

Havnbjergskov is managed as coppice woodland. Coppicing is a form of woodland management in which trees regrow from the stump after being cut back. Thus, alongside the historic buildings, woodland management emerges as a distinct aspect of the landscape.

For a church-themed walk, the Kirkeruten is a different option: it connects five churches in North Als via existing paths. By contrast, the Havnbjerg Strand cycling route focuses on its starting point at Havnbjerg Centret, its 11 km length and its route through woodland and along the beach. If you choose routes by theme, the cycling route focuses on the landscape, while the Kirkeruten connects several churches. Details of the Kirkeruten may also be revised; check the current description before setting out.
