Egernsund can be explored through a range of travel interests: hiking routes, Lågmaj Beach, and architecture and brickmaking history each offer a different focus. If you are looking for a hotel, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay. The routes and places provide concrete points of reference—from a named route length to a historic church and a seasonal ferry connection.

Hiking and brickmaking history

The Nybøl Nor trail is 6.5 kilometres long, runs along Nybøl Nor and passes several brickworks. It begins in Smølled and ends in Egernsund. The Gendarmen Path passes through Egernsund and the brickworkers’ quarter. The routes therefore differ in their focus: for the Nybøl Nor trail, the length, its course along the Nor and the brickworks along the route are important; the Gendarmen Path focuses on its connection with the brickworkers’ quarter.

From the Middle Ages to the present day, Egernsund was the centre of the region’s and all of Northern Europe’s brickmaking industry. The brickworks along the Nybøl Nor trail provide a tangible connection to this long history.

Church and art

Egernsund Church was built from red bricks between 1907 and 1909, based on designs by architect Richard Jepsen Dethlefsen. Its altar figures come from Tyrol. The construction period, materials and design give the church a clearly defined architectural profile; the origin of the figures adds a distinctive note.

The brick sculptures are also part of the town’s cultural character. They stand at Havnepladsen on the shore of “Æ Soungaf” and were inaugurated on 20 November 1993. Thus, a dated work of art by the water adds to the architectural and industrial history.

Coast, harbour and seasonal connection

In the surrounding area, Nybøl Nor is connected to the Flensburg Fjord by the narrow Egernsund. Lågmaj Beach is a sandy beach on the sheltered waters of the Flensburg Fjord. It received the Blue Flag for the first time in 2021. If its current certification status matters for your plans, check before visiting.

The beach is located in a Natura 2000 area, where jet skis and personal watercraft are not permitted. Check the current local rules before travelling. This will help you plan your visit to the beach in line with the actual conditions of use.

At Egernsund Harbour, you can moor at the 30-metre-long pier or at the landing stage. As harbour facilities can change, it is advisable to check the current mooring options before using them. In spring and summer, the Thjalfe bicycle ferry carries cyclists and pedestrians on the route from Egernsund via Brunsnæs to Langballigau in Germany. If you are planning to cross, check the timetable before travelling.
