Vamdrup is a border railway town with a cultural heritage area designated for preservation in its central district. The town’s history as a border railway station shapes this historical perspective on the place. On foot or by bike, you can also encounter routes that bring the Kongeå and its surroundings into focus in different ways.

Border History and Architectural Heritage

The Kongeåstien passes through a historic borderland whose history dates back to the 13th century. Its stages 9 and 10 pass through Vamdrup, running from Benbækken to the source of the Kongeå east of the town. You can therefore experience the route as either a longer journey through the borderland or via its section in Vamdrup.

The Kongeåmuseet is located in the former residence of the stationmaster. Its permanent exhibition explores the national border and the former customs borders between Jutland and Schleswig. The museum thus focuses on two distinct border topics: the national border and the historic customs borders. Another specific detail stands out at Vamdrup Kirke: the south portal has a magnificent four-column entrance with decorated column capitals.

Hiking, Cycling and the Source of the Kongeå

R64 Kongeådalen is a cultural-historical cycling route from Kolding to Vamdrup and on to the Jels Lakes. In Vamdrup, the route crosses the Kongeå. For cyclists, R64 offers a clearly described route with named stops; the Kongeåstien places a different emphasis on hiking through the historic borderland.

The source of the Kongeå lies in the scrubland near Gåskær, southeast of Vamdrup. Parking is available on Farrisvej between house numbers 37 and 39 for the walk to the source. There is also a car park at Farris Bridge; from there, the path to the source follows Farris Bæk. These landmarks can help you include the source and the route in your plans without assuming a walking time or distance.

Green Corridors, Picnic Spots and Activities

Green corridors along the Kongeå and Vamdrup Å extend into the town centre. Paths connect schools, sports facilities and residential areas with the town centre. At Vamdrup Åsted on the Kongeå, tables and benches are available for picnics; the site is right beside the paved path between Enghaven and Kongeåparken. You can also try using an Archimedes’ screw there to lift water from the Kongeå. Legepladsen i Margretelund in Vamdrup has a picnic shelter.

Kongeå Badet offers opportunities for water play and swimming practice. The swimming pool is 25 metres long and has six lanes; the warm-water pool is 1.30 metres deep. Check the operating details before your visit. The fenced Vamdrup Hundeskov woodland covers 3,000 m². Dogs can run freely there under their owners’ supervision; check the local rules before you go.
