Lunderskov: Mill Landscape, Walking Trails and Cultural History
Accommodation in Lunderskov
In Lunderskov, a distinctive mill landscape, waterside paths and historical landmarks come together. Drabæks Mølle lies in a green oasis in the heart of the town. The surrounding area offers different options for planning your trip: you might be interested in a walk, a cycling route or the history of the area.
Mill Landscape and Nature
The 41-hectare area around Drabæks Mølle was protected in 1972. Glacial hills and a deeply cut valley shape the landscape around Drabæks Mølledam; Drabæks Mølleå flows through the valley. The green meadows along the river form an important habitat in the local area. Kingfishers nest along Drabæks Mølleå, though their presence may vary by season.
A water system near Hvidkilde is also among the landscape’s notable features: a spring flows first through a carp pond and then through eight fishponds. Hvidkilde Manor stands at the southern end of Drabæks Mølledam and was built in 1913.
Walking and Cycling
The marked Isfugleruten is about three kilometres long. It starts at Drabæks Møllesø and passes the historic lakes and waterways of Lunderskov. The path varies in character, with both wide and narrow sections. Some parts are easily accessible, while the hilly terrain makes other sections more challenging. The green space at Drabæks Møllesø has picnic tables and is suitable for a picnic.
Drabæks Mølledam is a separate feature: the entire body of water can be circled on foot. If you plan to walk this loop, check local conditions before setting out. The information about Isfugleruten and the loop around Mølledam therefore describes two different ways to explore the area on foot.
For a longer trip, the 29.5-kilometre Middelalderruten passes through Lunderskov as a scenic, historic cycling route. It follows minor country roads and forest tracks and originates from Hærvejen, the old cattle-driving route from Jutland to Europe. By comparison, the roughly three-kilometre Isfugleruten is the shorter of the two routes described; it is a marked walking trail, while Middelalderruten is a cycling route.
History and Art in the Area
Drabæks Mølle was founded in 1553 as a royal watermill. Lunderskov is also home to 16 preserved burial mounds. Just outside the town stands Skanderup Kirke, built more than 800 years ago. These places offer different historical perspectives: the mill represents the history of water use, while the burial mounds and church provide further evidence of the past in and around Lunderskov.
Another cultural destination in town is MÆRKværdig, an art studio and gallery run by artist Lisbet Thorøe Larsen. There, old objects with a history and patina are transformed into sculptural collages known as assemblages. Visits to the studio and gallery can be arranged by phone, text message or email. Check the contact details before you arrive.
Getting There and Planning
Lunderskov can be reached by train. Drabæks Mølle is 700 metres from the station via Møllegade. If you are travelling by train, it is a good idea to check the current timetable. When planning your trip, you can choose between the town’s different attractions according to your interests: the marked walking trail, the longer cycling route, the mill landscape, or the historical and artistic sites.
