For a stay in Hejlsminde, the beach and water activities go hand in hand with nature watching and local history. The beach is in the middle of town, near the harbour and the old seaside hotel. Other points to consider when planning your trip are the water sports on offer, the natural areas around Noret and the history of the seaside resort. This can help you decide which aspects of Hejlsminde best match your interests.

Beach in the Town Centre

Hejlsminde Beach has been awarded the Blue Flag and has good bathing water quality. It is a natural meeting place in the middle of town, near the harbour and the old seaside hotel. The beach has fine sand; the shallow coastal water has a sandy and stony seabed.

Facilities include a bathing jetty, a kiosk and a toilet. A wheelchair ramp leads into the water, and there is also an accessible toilet. If these facilities are important for your plans, check the latest information before your visit. This will help you plan your beach visit around the details that matter to you, without treating the different facilities as interchangeable.

Water Sports and Harbour

The harbour at Hejlsminde offers good conditions for windsurfing and stand-up paddleboarding. There is also access to a slipway. The Dunkerbeck Windsurfing Center in Hejlsminde rents equipment and offers windsurfing and stand-up paddleboarding lessons. If you plan to take a lesson, check availability before you arrive.

Mindegården near Hejlsminde is another spot with good conditions for windsurfing. The shallow water extends far out, and there is plenty of room on the beach to rig your equipment. Beach conditions vary by season. The activities described therefore differ: windsurfing and SUP are the focus at the harbour, while at Mindegården the emphasis is on the water conditions and space to rig your equipment.

During the season, the Viking ship Freja Byrding has its permanent berth in Hejlsminde Marina. The Nature Park Lillebælt plan for 2023–2027 also lists weekly sailing regattas in Hejlsminde. If you want to plan your visit around a regatta, check the current schedule. Hejlsminde is the endpoint of the Østkystruten, Route T19.

Nature and Landscape around Noret

The route around Hejlsminde Nor passes through a natural area home to white-tailed eagles, marsh harriers and orchids that bloom in early summer. At Noret, a two-storey birdwatching tower offers views over Hejls Nor. Noret is a wildlife reserve with a diverse range of bird and plant life. The landscape there consists of a hilly moraine landscape that was formerly used for agriculture.

Vargårde Skov also has a distinctive landscape: the forest is a steep-slope forest typical of East Jutland, with tall beech trees and beautiful steep slopes along the Little Belt. From there, it may be possible to see harbour porpoises hunting along the Little Belt coast. The possibility of seeing one is not a guarantee of a sighting.

The protected area includes Hejls Nor/Mindet, Hejlsminde Bay, the coast and the holiday home areas. These are part of Natura 2000, the F47 Lillebælt bird protection area and the R15 Lillebælt Ramsar site. Hejlsminde Bay is suitable for fishing in spring and winter. Fresh water flowing out of Hejls Nor can create favourable conditions; please observe the protection zone.

Traces of Local History

Hejlsminde Badehotel was built in 1912 and is now considered a landmark of the town. The former Kolding–Hejlsminde railway line also shaped its development: established in 1911, it helped the fishing village become a popular holiday and excursion destination thanks to its waterside location.

After the loss of the southern parts of Jutland, Hejlsminde became a border town; the Danish-German border ran through the sluice outlet. This historical role adds another facet of the town's past to its identity as a place by the water.
