Mariager: Monastery History, Roses and Fjord
Accommodation in Mariager
The town offers a variety of themes, from the old town and a walking route to trips on the water and on the historic railway.
Monastery History and the Old Town
Mariager Church and the monastery are the remains of a medieval Bridgettine monastery. It was founded around 1446 and dissolved with the introduction of the Reformation in 1536. An exhibition at the Mariager Museum is dedicated to the monastery from around 1430 to 1536. Its timeframe therefore begins before the monastery’s foundation around 1446 and extends to its dissolution.
The old town also tells the story of Mariager: cobbled streets and old half-timbered houses adorned with roses shape its appearance. The buildings have been preserved in their original style and are still in use. Another detail at Mariager Church is its organ, which was installed and fully voiced in spring 2010.
Experience and Understand Salt
The Mariager Saltcenter focuses on various aspects of salt. The salt exhibition covers the geology, history, chemistry, and significance of salt; films, props, and experiments bring these subjects to life. For those interested in how salt is made, Sydehytten offers another way to explore the subject: Mariager Sydesalt is made there by hand from seawater that is about 260 million years old.
The Dead Sea experience includes a saltwater bath with water at about 39°C. The strong buoyancy lets you float in the water. During a visit, you can explore different aspects of salt, from its geology and history to its traditional production and the bathing experience.
Town Walking Route and Rose Garden
The Mariager Route is a varied and scenic town walking route through Mariager’s historic areas, marked with yellow triangles. In 2024, it was certified as a Premium Town Walking Route by the German Hiking Institute, becoming the first route in Denmark to receive this distinction. When planning, note that the section along the fjord may be flooded on some days, and check conditions before your walk.
The Mariager Rose Garden offers a different perspective on the town. This 2,000-square-metre rosarium comprises 22 themed gardens. It is home to 400 different rose varieties, with around 800 plants in total. The town walking route and the rose garden offer different highlights: one focuses on a route through historic town areas, while the other showcases the variety of its rose gardens.
Fjord Views, Train Rides and Seasonal Activities
Just outside Mariager lies Hohøj, a Bronze Age burial mound about 12 metres high and around 72 metres in diameter. From there, the view stretches far across the Mariager Fjord and the surrounding hilly landscape. These measurements give a clear sense of the historic mound’s size; it is also a viewpoint in its own right.
For trips departing from Mariager, Svanen offers views across the Mariager Fjord and the surrounding landscape. Timetables vary, so it is a good idea to check departure times for your chosen date. The Mariager-Handest Veteran Railway, by contrast, offers a 17-kilometre journey through fjord landscapes, small-town scenery, beech forest, gentle hills, heathland, and river valleys. The journey takes 45 minutes each way, and the railway operates seasonally. This means you can plan for a specific duration for each train journey, while bearing in mind that Svanen’s timetables vary.
During the summer season, Mariager Water Park is located about 120 metres offshore from Mariager’s sandy beach in the Mariager Fjord. It offers a slide, trampolines, and tunnels, and is open seasonally from June to September. If you are planning a visit, check the conditions again before travelling.
