Helberskov offers two different starting points for planning a trip: a closely knit historic village and a coast where swimming is possible. If you are considering a stay here, you can weigh up village history, scenery and activities by the water. The farms, Bjerget and the coast shaped by land reclamation are particularly distinctive.

A village with a closely knit historic layout

Helberskov is a so-called *forteklyngeby*: the farms are clustered closely around the village pond and the old meeting place. The farms that have not been relocated, along with smaller, closely spaced country houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, line a winding street. This places the farms grouped around the village pond and meeting place alongside the houses along the street as distinct elements of the village landscape.

Helberskov is considered a well-preserved village with many old half-timbered houses. Lodsgården is a specific architectural landmark: all three types of half-timbering are represented in its buildings. The variety at Lodsgården thus adds to the half-timbered character that defines the village as a whole.

Bjerget: Landscape, History and Tradition

Bjerget is a moraine hill offering wide views over the surrounding area. It is also a local meeting place where activities are held for residents and visitors to the region. Its landform, views and local use each highlight a different aspect of the place.

During the Second World War, a German coastal battery was located on Bjerget. The German garrison on Bjerget surrendered on 10 May 1945, among the last in Denmark. A memorial stone on Bjerget commemorates the liberation, which in Helberskov did not take place until that same day. History is also firmly rooted in the coastal landscape: the Helberskov Pumpehus was built on the coast north of Helberskov in 1947.

Fastelavn, celebrated with ring jousting, and Whitsun, celebrated with a maypole, are also associated with Bjerget. If you are planning to attend either celebration, check the exact dates in advance.

The Coast and Finding Your Way Around

Helberskov Strand is part of a coast shaped by land reclamation, with coastal meadows and shallow water. Swimming is possible along the coast at Helberskov, which is also considered suitable for windsurfing. Coastal meadows and shallow water describe the character of the coast, while swimming and windsurfing offer different activities for your stay.

Helberskov is one of Mariagerfjord Municipality’s 15 bathing water stations and has an official bathing water profile. The Mariagerfjord Municipality bathing water page was updated in 2025. If you use the profile to plan your visit, check it before you go.

Nearby is Als Odde, a protected coastal area with mudflats, coastal meadows and a small fishing village. The area is freely accessible; publicly accessible paths can be found in the plantation north of the protected area. From Als, you can reach the headland by driving south through Helberskov. This direction will help you find your way if you are planning a trip there.
