Culture and history in Fjerritslev
The Fjerritslev Brewery and Local History Museum is home to an authentic brewery from the late 19th century, preserved as if the brewers had only just left. Tinghuset is a listed civic and activity centre in Fjerritslev. At the Tinghuset Cultural Centre, visitors can enjoy concerts, exhibitions and sing-alongs. At Fjerritslev Church, a memorial stone by the entrance commemorates the reunification of Southern Jutland with Denmark in 1920.
Local history can also be explored through newspaper and archival material. The Local History Archive for Fjerritslev and the surrounding area collects, registers and preserves documents, photographs and newspaper clippings of local historical value from the former municipality of Fjerritslev. Visitors can consult bound copies of the Fjerritslev Avis from 1899 to 1990, as well as books on local, family and regional history. The archive is located in the basement of Fjerritslev Library, which is housed in the former town hall, converted into a library in 1987. The archive is open on Mondays from 1 pm to 5 pm; check opening hours during the summer holidays before travelling.
For a cinema visit, Fjerritslev Cinema screens new feature films almost every day, except Saturdays. Check the current programme before planning your visit. Fjerritslev Swimming Hall has a 12.5 × 25-metre competition pool, as well as one-metre and three-metre diving boards. There are also direct bus services from Fjerritslev to Aalborg and Thisted, with no need to change. Checking the timetable will help you plan your journey.
Trails, nature and exercise
The Fjerritslev-Kollerup Strand Planet Trail begins at Kirkepladsen, by a striking sun sculpture. Along the trail, planet markers illustrate the relative sizes and distances in the solar system. The site also includes a sundial built around a model of the large parabolic dune west of Klim Bjerg. The trail thus connects astronomy with an artistic representation of a landform.
For marked routes of varying distances, Fjerritslev Trimklub offers trails of 3.5, 5, 7, 9 and 10 kilometres. They start at Dyrskuepladsen, by Idrætscenter Jammerbugt. The area around Fjerritslev also has a mountain bike trail in Svinkløv Dune Plantation: it is more than 20 kilometres long, marked and very hilly, and starts in Slettestrand. Its length and the terrain described set it apart from the shorter routes offered by the Trimklub.
Vejlerne, a bird sanctuary covering up to 6,000 hectares, is also located near Fjerritslev. Observation towers and hides offer opportunities to watch breeding and resting waterbirds. The Vejlerne Nature Centre has an exhibition about the area’s birdlife, and binoculars are available for public use. Those interested in landforms can also visit Lien nearby, Denmark’s longest inland coastal cliff, which reaches up to 66 metres in height. A path through Fosdalen passes Vor Frue Kilde, a spring believed to have healing powers in the Middle Ages.
