Vesterø Harbour on Læsø: Harbour, Beach and Sea
Accommodation in Vesterø Harbour
Vesterø Harbour is the port served by the Læsø ferry. The beach, water activities and maritime history give the town its own additional highlights. If you are looking for a hotel in Vesterø Harbour, you can choose your destination based on whether the ferry connection, a day at the beach, water activities or the historic harbour setting matters most to you.
Arriving and getting your bearings on Læsø
Direct buses run from the harbour square to Byrum, 7 km away, and to Østerby Harbour, 20 km away. This means Byrum is closer to the harbour square than Østerby Harbour; the buses connect the ferry port directly with both destinations. Check departure times before your trip, as timetables may vary. This lets you consider the harbour as a starting point in its own right and distinguish it from the two bus destinations.
Læsø’s Ø-Camino can also begin and end in Vesterø Harbour. If you are planning to take the route, you can therefore consider the harbour as your starting or end point. Route conditions may change. Along with the ferry connection, this is a specific point of reference for your planning, without requiring you to assume a particular walking time.
Beach and excursions
The water at Vesterø Beach is shallow and warm, so small children can swim and play there. For families who value a child-friendly place to swim, this is a useful factor when choosing a destination. The beach offers a different focus from the Ø-Camino: here, it is all about time by the water, while the route can begin or end at the harbour.
Snorkelling, diving and fishing
At the moles in Vesterø Harbour, beginner and experienced snorkellers and divers can explore sandy seabed, rocky reefs and seaweed forests. The water at the south mole is shallow and access for snorkelling is easy; it is also suitable for beginners and families with children. However, conditions for these activities depend on the weather, currents and visibility. Take these factors into account when planning your trip.
Vesterø Harbour Mole is also a good starting point for fishing. Mackerel, flatfish, mullet and sea trout are caught there; which species are available depends on the season. Snorkelling and diving focus on the seabed and seaweed forests around the moles, while fishing depends in part on the season for the fish species mentioned.
Harbour history and Læsø Kur
Vesterø Harbour is Læsø’s first harbour and was built in 1872. The Vesterø Rescue Station was established in 1875. The history of a shipyard in the harbour also dates back to the late 19th century. These milestones give the town a maritime historical setting, distinct from today’s activities on the water.
Læsø Kur offers a blend of history and wellness: the former Vesterø Harbour Church was converted into Læsø Kur in 2008. The spa is in the centre of Vesterø and also on the edge of the Kattegat, overlooking dunes, beach and sea. It can be reached on foot from the ferry; walking conditions depend on local circumstances. Læsø Kur offers spa treatments, salt baths, massages and wellness based on Læsø salt, clay and seaweed. The offering may change, so it is advisable to check what is currently available before your visit.
Practical information around the harbour
There are toilets in the service building at Vesterø Harbour. Visitors can borrow fishing rods and nets at the small red houses known as “Havet i Havnen”, next to the ferry office. Check in advance whether the equipment you want is available. Bicycles can be rented a few hundred metres from Vesterø Harbour; here too, it is a good idea to check availability before your trip.
