Discover Byrum: Church, Views and Crafts
Accommodation in Byrum
Byrum brings together several interests on Læsø: the Romanesque church architecture of Byrum Kirke, the Thorvald Hansens Tårn observation tower, art at the nearby Tårnhuset, and creative workshops at Læsø Mejeri. A stage of the Ø-CAMINO Læsø also leads to Byrum. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, these differences can help with planning: you can focus on local sights, crafts or a hike.
Romanesque Church and Vaulted Interior
Byrum Kirke is one of Denmark’s oldest churches. It was built in the Romanesque style during the Valdemar era, around the year 1200. It is the largest church on Læsø and also the only one whose entire church interior is vaulted. The size comparison is with the other churches on Læsø, while the fully vaulted interior is a feature of its architecture. Byrum Kirke is open daily from 8:00 to 16:00. As opening hours can change, check them before your visit.
Views, Tower Construction and Art
Thorvald Hansens Tårn offers a different perspective. The red observation tower is 17 metres high and stands on a hill in Byrum; the view stretches far across the island and sea. The structure was built by Thorvald Hansen using handmade bricks. Hansen was a clog maker, bicycle mechanic and former sailor. The tower therefore brings together the view and its craft-based origins: its position on the hill shapes the panorama, while its materials and builder define its construction history. Tårnhuset near Thorvald Hansens Tårn in Byrum displays a collection of artworks connected with Læsø.
Creative Workshops at Mejeripladsen
The creative workshops at Læsø Mejeri on Mejeripladsen in Byrum include weaving, felting, porcelain painting, willow weaving, knitting and stone painting. Open workshops and themed days take place throughout the year, often in connection with Mejeridagene. If you are interested in a particular themed day, check the relevant dates in advance so you can include the theme you want in your travel plans.
Food and Walking Options
Birch & Surkaj is a restaurant, café and micro-bakery in Byrum on Læsø. Guided tours are offered on Rønnerne, in the area around Byrum. This makes it possible to distinguish between a food venue in town and a guided activity in the surrounding area when planning.
Stage 3 of the Ø-CAMINO Læsø is 18 kilometres long and leads to Byrum via Læsø Saltsyderi. Unlike the individual local attractions, it describes a hiking route with a clearly stated distance and a named destination. If you would like to combine hiking with visits to local sights, you can treat this stage as a separate part of your trip. Its length gives you a concrete planning figure alongside the local cultural and craft experiences.
