Holme: Beach, Jernhatten and Moraine Landscape
Accommodation in Holme
When planning a trip to Holme, several specific themes come together: the beach on the Kattegat, a hilly moraine landscape, and cultural history in the surrounding area. You can weigh these aspects against one another when choosing your destination, depending on whether the coast, views or history should take centre stage.
Moraine Landscape and Jernhatten
Holme lies east of Stubbe Sø in a hilly moraine landscape. The village was built on rounded moraine hills just over 30 metres high at the eastern end of the Stubbe Sø depression. The area around Holme is full of contrasts and highly varied, with outstanding scenic qualities.
The protected moraine hill Jernhatten near Arnakke adds its own distinctive landscape feature. From Jernhatten, there are sweeping views across the sea towards the island of Hjelm. Different perspectives are therefore central: the landform on which Holme was built, and the views from Jernhatten across the sea and towards the island. If landscape features and views are especially important to you when choosing a destination, these characteristics can be considered together.
Beach and Walks
The 2021 bathing water profile places Holme Strand on the Kattegat along Dianavej and names Baunehøjvej and Arielvej as routes from Holme to the beach. For the beach option, it therefore describes both the coastal location and two named access routes.
The 1.5-kilometre walk on Jernhatten starts at the car park at Havmøllevej 16. The Jernhatten Rundt circular walk reaches the beach via constructed steps. These are separate details: the 1.5-kilometre distance applies to the walk on Jernhatten; for Jernhatten Rundt, access to the beach via steps is specified. This lets you distinguish the stated distance from the information about the route of the circular walk.
Nature Information and Cultural History
The former horse stable at Havmøllen is a publicly accessible nature information centre with maps and interpretive panels about nature and marine life in the surrounding area. Nature information is the focus here, while Jernhatten is associated with landscape and views. Current visiting arrangements may change with the site’s operations, so check before your visit.
Havmøllen also has a café and farm shop. Their opening arrangements may change too, so check the latest information in advance.
Near Holme, Havmøllegården is a place of great cultural-historical significance. Also in the area, Havmøllen Skanse was built in 1810 by the Danish military to defend against English gunboats during the English Wars of 1807 to 1814. Havmøllegården represents the area’s cultural-historical significance, while the history of the rampart specifies a particular construction date, builder and defensive purpose.
