Odder Municipality is shaped by diverse landscapes and stories: protected coastal areas, the car-free island of Tunø, paths by the water and historic mills all feature in the region. As you plan, nature experiences and cultural sites offer different points of focus. Coastal routes vary in length and course; the mills and Gylling Church offer specific insights into the history of technology and architecture.

Coastal Landscapes and Island Nature

Norsminde Fjord lies on the northern boundary of Odder Municipality. It has been a wildlife reserve since 1942 and is now an EU bird protection area. The Natura 2000 site includes, among other areas, the coast from Gyllingnæs to Hou. It protects continuous coastal meadows, as well as coastal and marine habitats and the breeding and migratory birds found there. A large area of shallow water begins at Hov and extends into Horsens Fjord, reaching the municipalities of Hedensted and Horsens; it is designated as a Natura 2000 site, among other protections.

Tunø belongs to Odder Municipality, is car-free and is known as an island with a strong local culture. Its varied nature includes steep cliffs, coastal meadows and completely untouched forest bogs. The ferry from Hou is the only ferry service to Tunø; the crossing takes about 55 minutes. Check the timetable when planning your trip. Opportunities for coastal fishing are listed at Gyllingnæs, in Lerdrup Bugt, on the Kattegat side and at Horskær; local conditions vary. The coastal meadows at Horskær on Gyllingnæs are closed to visitors from 1 March to 1 August to protect nesting birds.

Walking and Cycling Routes

The Norsminde–Kysing Næs circular route is 3 kilometres long and passes through the harbour area and along grassy paths around the peninsula. On Tunø, an 8-kilometre circular walk follows high cliffs; there are opportunities to take a break at quiet bathing beaches along the way. Near Hou, a signposted coastal path forms a 10-kilometre circular route along the beaches to Hølken Strand, then back through Hou. The different lengths and landscapes can help you choose a walk that suits your plans: the harbour area, cliffs and stretches of beach each offer their own experience.

For a cycling trip, the signposted 19-kilometre Route 3 of Kulturringen runs south from Odder towards Horsens Fjord. It goes through Hou and continues southwest towards Søby and Gylling. On Gyllingnæs, a 9-kilometre coastal path also leads to the southern tip of Kalsenakke. Conditions on the routes described may change; check for current information before setting out.

Mills, Museum and Architectural History

Built in 1883, Odder Vand- og Dampmølle is an outstanding example of the last generation of Danish custom mills. Visitors can explore three floors of machinery and mechanisms from before electronics entered industry. The mill shows how it looked when production ceased in 1955. Odder Museum presents exhibitions on local cultural history and offers outdoor walks that explore historic traces in the landscape and cultural environment. The individual programmes may vary.

Gylling Mølle also has a varied building history: it was first built in 1860, collapsed in a storm in 1906 and was rebuilt at the same site in 1908. The mill houses an exhibition about its function and history. Gylling Church dates from the late 12th century; its original Romanesque nave and chancel have been preserved. Its stilt tower is also distinctive: this rare architectural form in Denmark is found almost exclusively in East Jutland.

Local Produce and Events

Brandbygegaard produces organic cider, sparkling wine, beer and spirits from fruit, berries and herbs grown on the farm. The products are handmade in small batches. During the summer half of the year, there are set times for tastings before purchase and for sales of products from the distillery and winery; check the current times in advance. Cultural events are also held throughout the year. The farm’s drinks and food made with locally produced ingredients are served there; individual events may vary.
