Grenå between culture, river and coast
Accommodation in Grenå
Grenå offers several themes to consider when planning a trip: local and regional history, a river landscape, the beach and Grenaa Plantage. Which of these shapes your stay depends on whether you are more interested in exhibitions and historic streets, activities on the water, or trails through forest and heathland.
Culture, History and Experiences
At Museum Østjylland Grenaa, the permanent exhibition explores the history of North Djursland over 10,000 years. Digital installations complement the exhibition and add another dimension to this long span of time.
The Kattegatcentret is home to 200 different animal species from around the world. In the tropical shark tank, the sharks are trained and fed daily. Alongside historical themes, animals and regular activities are also highlights among Grenå’s attractions.
The Lydvandring i August Kroghs fodspor follows August Krogh’s childhood in Grenaa in the late 19th century across seven stops. The town also offers opportunities to discover its architectural history: Grenaa Kirke was built of brick around 1300. Nederstræde, a side street off Lillegade, is a pleasant street lined with idyllic, well-preserved half-timbered houses.
There are different ways to enjoy art and live performances: Baunhøj Mølle Grenaa hosts changing art exhibitions. Kulturhuset Pavillonen offers theatre, musicals, comedy, visual arts and live music. The cultural offerings range from changing exhibitions to various forms of stage and live entertainment.
Beach, River and Harbour
The Grenaa Å runs through Grenaa, is about seven kilometres long and flows into the Kattegat at Grenaa Havn. Canoeists can paddle along the Grenåen from the town centre at Gasværksvej to Enslevgården. If you are planning a canoe trip, check the booking information in advance, as it may change.
Grenaa Strand was awarded the Blue Flag in 2026. The calm waters are suitable for children, surfers and SUP enthusiasts; the shallow inner section is considered particularly suitable for SUP. These two details help you assess the beach according to different interests: its calm waters on the one hand, and its shallow inner section on the other.
Ferries run daily from Grenaa Havn to the island of Anholt and to Halmstad in Sweden. If you are planning a crossing, check the timetable before your trip. Grenaa Marina has service buildings with showers and toilets, as well as a coin-operated laundry.
Forest, Heathland and Trails
Grenaa Plantage combines woodland with extensive heathland, characterised by heather and juniper. Trails in the plantation are suitable for walking and cycling; there is also a nature playground. Mountain bikers can try a singletrack route in the plantation, described as the longest in Denmark.
The Kløverstierne in Grenaa pass through the town’s streets and lanes, follow the Grenaaen river, cross the plantation and continue into the open countryside at the tip of Djursland. They take in a variety of settings, from urban areas to open countryside. Grenaa Naturskole runs public tours throughout the year.
Another way to connect with the landscape through regional voices is the Hjemstavn-Podwalk in Grenaa Plantage: visitors can scan a QR code and listen to voices from the region as they walk through the landscape. Check whether the experience is available before your visit.
