Smedebæk brings together several different topics for trip planning: the stream of the same name, the Midtjysk Lystfiskercenter and its lakes, two stone markers, and a cycling route that crosses the Smedebæk. These points of interest represent different interests and should not be treated as interchangeable. When choosing a hotel for a trip to Smedebæk, you can first consider which of these topics you would like to include in your stay.

Stream and waterways

The Smedebæk flows into the Holtum Å, which is a tributary of the Skjern Å. The sequence of waterways is therefore clear: the stream first reaches the Holtum Å, which is a tributary of the Skjern Å. A municipal environmental description dated 23 May 2017 identifies the Smedebæk as a public watercourse and as protected under Section 3 of the Danish Nature Protection Act.

Specific features of individual stretches of the stream have also been described. From Hvillumvej to its confluence with the Holtum Å, the Smedebæk meanders more, and suitable spawning grounds can be found in places. Near Hvillumvej, the stream is particularly suitable for larger fish because of its great depth and predominantly sandy bed. These notes concern different features of the watercourse: spawning grounds are mentioned for parts of one stretch, while the statement about larger fish refers to the area near Hvillumvej. Conditions in the stream may change, so check them locally before making specific plans.

Distinguishing the fishing lakes from the stream

The Midtjysk Lystfiskercenter is located at Løvbjergvej 19–21 in Smedebæk. It has one large put-and-take lake and several smaller lakes. These are features of the center; depth, a sandy bed and spawning grounds, by contrast, refer to the natural Smedebæk. This distinction is useful when choosing a specific destination for your trip: the lakes belong to the center, while the fish-related features described above belong to the stream. If you plan to visit the center, check the current address and the operator’s information before setting out.

Two stone markers, different features

Both stone markers are named Vildtbaneafmærkning, Smedebæk vandmølle, and are numbered #1 or #2. #1 is a dressed stone measuring 165 cm in height. #2 is also dressed, but is square and 70 cm high. The measurements help distinguish the two markers: #1 is considerably taller, while the shape of #2 is also described.

The sides of #2 can also be distinguished by their features. “17 No” is engraved on the east-facing side; the south-facing side has three horizontal stripes. Together with its number and square shape, these details provide a specific description of this stone marker. Visitors interested in the markers can use the different features of the two numbered objects to identify them, rather than attributing the inscription and stripes to the taller stone, #1.

Cycling route and route to the nature school

A route guide published in 2010 describes how the Banestien: Den skæve Bane cycling route crosses the Smedebæk on its way to Hampen. This gives you a specific reference point for planning your route. Check current trail conditions locally before going on a bike ride.

Bus route 190 between Ikast and Brande stops in Smedebæk. From there, it is 6.4 km on foot to the nature school. This distance refers to the walk from Smedebæk to the nature school, making it a separate planning point from the cycling route described above. If you plan to walk this route, take the stated distance into account and check the bus timetable in advance.
