Engesvang can be planned around different interests: walks and nature watching take centre stage around Bølling Sø, while the Klosterlund Museum and Engesvang Kirke offer insight into the area's history. The specific route lengths can help you choose a tour. They range from short routes on the Clover Trails to a tour of about twelve kilometres.

Walking around Bølling Sø

A marked route runs around Bølling Sø. It is about 12 km long and suitable for walkers and cyclists. The Hærvejsperlen Bølling Sø is an 11.6 km circular route that starts and ends at the Klosterlund Museum. It is certified as a walking route and is part of the Hærvejen Pearls and Denmark’s Nature Trails networks.

Along the Hærvejsperlen, lake shores, meadows, heathland and wetlands alternate. Visitors can discover stories about the region's natural and cultural heritage along the route. Walks of 2 to 12 km also offer the chance to learn about the lake's history and hear stories about the Tollund Man.

The Clover Trails in and around Engesvang offer four routes measuring 2.5, 5.5, 9.9 and 12.7 km. One of them passes through the old part of Engesvang, with the old dairy, the old school and Engesvang Kirke. The different route lengths give you a specific basis for comparison when planning; no walking time is specified.

Lake, moor and landscape

Bølling Sø formed after the last Ice Age and later developed into a raised bog. The bog was drained for peat extraction; in 2005, it was restored as a lake. Today, the area around the lake is home to a diverse bird population and several easily accessible viewpoints.

On the western side of the lake, a paved, especially accessible path runs along Kragelundvej between the Dværgbakken rest area and Klosterlund. North of Bølling Sø, near Engesvang, lies the protected Stenholt Skov. The forest covers about 100 hectares and is known for its gnarled oaks. South of the lake, near Engesvang, there is a shelter with a fire pit, designated site 12b.

Peat industry and archaeological traces

The Klosterlund Museum is housed in a former peat factory. It tells the story of the peat industry and heathland cultivation around Bølling Sø. The exhibition “Stenalderjægerne ved Søen” presents archaeological traces of the lake's early inhabitants. A visit therefore brings together industrial history and finds from early settlement.

Southeast of Bølling Sø, an information board marks the site where the Tollund Man was found. The find site and the stories about the Tollund Man are different ways to connect with the region's past: walks explore the stories, while the board marks the find site.

Engesvang Kirke and practical information

Engesvang Kirke was inaugurated on 14 March 1897 and designed by Rudolph Frimodt Clausen. Every year before Christmas, a nativity scene can be seen in the church. Concerts are also held there regularly; dates may vary. The middle section of the Hærvejen also passes through Engesvang.

From Engesvang railway station, Silkeborg town centre is 12 minutes away by train. Timetables and train services may change, so check the timetable before your trip. Rowing boats and canoes can be permanently moored at the end of Ellevej in Engesvang by arrangement with Naturstyrelsen. If you plan to do this, confirm the arrangement in advance, as requirements may change.
