When planning a trip to Avlum, there are three specific aspects to consider: architectural history, routes and an annual event held in August. Aulum Mill and Aulum Church represent different architectural and historical periods; for the routes, approximate lengths and starting points help with orientation. The Aulum Dyrskue is a separate event held at a regular time each year.

Mill and church: architectural style and history

Aulum Mill was completed in 1908. It is a Dutch-style gallery windmill with a brick base. This makes it possible to identify the building by a specific year, its type of mill and an architectural feature. For those interested in architecture, the question of its style is linked to its brick base.

Aulum Church offers a different historical perspective. It was built around the 13th century; its interior is designed in the Renaissance style. The smaller of its two bells dates from 1507. The church's age and the bell's date relate to different aspects: the former indicates the approximate time it was built, while the latter refers to a specific bell. This distinguishes the construction period, the interior design and a datable detail of its furnishings.

Routes: lengths and starting points

For the tours, length and starting point are the most specific selection criteria. The Sinding cycling route is about 33 kilometres long and starts at Aulum Fritidscenter. The Jersild route is about 9.5 kilometres long; it starts at the car park by Aulum Fritidscenter. The stated route lengths differ considerably, and both routes have a specifically named starting point.

Both cycling routes and four walking routes start in Aulum. Lokal-Håndbogen contains descriptions and maps for two cycling routes and six walking routes in the area around Aulum. This information supplements the specific starting points with an overview of routes in the surrounding area. Starting points, route lengths and routes may change; check them again before your trip.

Railway station and station building

Cykelrute 53 starts and ends at Aulum railway station. Its facilities include a waiting room and a bicycle pump. As station facilities may change, check whether they are available if you plan to use them. Aulum's original station building is still standing and was designed by H. Wenck, chief architect of the Danish State Railways.

The station building's premises are available to associations, groups and individuals for voluntary cultural, social, educational or leisure activities. If you are planning to use the premises or visit, check their availability and intended purpose locally in advance.

Aulum Dyrskue in August

The Aulum Dyrskue has been held every year since 1907 on the second Saturday in August; the specific calendar date changes from year to year. The programme includes livestock exhibitors and commercial exhibitors, flea market and sales stalls, associations, shows, a hobby horse competition and an animal show for children. This event is therefore a different reason to travel from a focus on buildings or routes.

The programme may change from year to year. If your stay depends on the Dyrskue, check the specific date and current programme in advance.
