Solbjerg: Stilling-Solbjerg Lake and Churches
Accommodation in Solbjerg
Explore Solbjerg through Stilling-Solbjerg Lake, places to spend time by the water and a rich church history. When planning your trip, consider whether you would like to focus on time by the lake, the trails in the area or the architecture of the churches. Local points of interest range from specific places to spend time to building phases separated by several centuries.
Stilling-Solbjerg Lake and its surroundings
Stilling-Solbjerg Lake is 7 kilometres long and covers 366 hectares. Its length and area provide two different measures of its size and help put the lakeside landscape into perspective. In Solbjerg, there is a communal area by the lake with a path, tables and benches. You can plan a break there; the facilities in public spaces may change over time.
Aarhus Å is also part of the water system: it flows from Solbjerg Sø to Aarhus Bugt. This connects two different geographical reference points without implying a particular visitor route.
Bathing area, shelter and activities by the water
The bathing area is at Solbjerg Søsport, Søvangsvej 1C. It has a well-maintained lawn and good facilities for spending time there; a path leads from the car park at Solbjerg Søsport to the bathing area. The address provides a specific point of reference if you are planning a visit to this bathing spot.
The site at Shelter Solbjerg Skov has a shelter and a fire pit with a permanently installed grill. If you include this site in your plans, check availability before your trip. The places to spend time therefore differ: the bathing area offers a lawn and facilities for visitors, while the shelter site has a shelter and grill.
Fishing from a boat or similar watercraft is permitted only in the parts of Stilling-Solbjerg Lake marked on the official map. The area around the lake has trails suitable for short walks. The Aarhus Municipality Outdoor Recreation Plan for 2013–2017 describes these trails as an opportunity for short walks; as trail conditions may change, check them before setting out.
Churches, building phases and local history
Different building phases can be distinguished at Tiset Church: the chancel and nave date from the late 12th century and are Romanesque. The tower and porch were built around 1500 in the Gothic style. These two building phases give an impression of how the building changed over time.
The Solbjerg church site has been archaeologically investigated. The church had a Romanesque ground plan in which the chancel was narrower than the nave. This form differs from the documented sequence of building phases at Tiset Church and adds to the picture of church architecture in the region.
The distinctive octagonal west tower of Astrup Church is part of the 1542 Renaissance renovation. Next to the church is Astrup Parsonage, preserved as an architectural gem. Together, the tower and neighbouring building offer two different points of interest for exploring architectural form and historic architecture.
The ecclesiastical divisions also explain part of the area's history: Solbjerg is divided among the parishes of Astrup, Tiset, Tulstrup and Hvilsted because their boundaries were established before the town came into being. This older division provides a separate historical context alongside the individual church buildings.
