Discover Møn Island: Nature, Cliffs and History
Accommodation in Møn Island
Striking coastal landscapes, wildlife watching and medieval history give a trip to Møn Island a variety of highlights. Møns Klint has a seven-kilometre coastline with white cliffs rising up to 128 metres above the sea. The coastline’s length and height convey two aspects of this landscape: its expanse along the sea and its steeply rising cliffs.
Nature between the coast and dark skies
At the Avnø Nature Centre, you can watch seals, waterbirds and migratory birds from a former control tower. Paths lead to suitable viewing spots. Knudshoved Odde has a different kind of landscape: this 15-kilometre-long peninsula on the Smålandsfarvandet includes beach ridges, dunes, open grasslands, forests and lakes, and is home to rare animal and plant species. Access to its tip may depend on the water level.
Møn and Nyord have been designated by the International Dark-Sky Association as the Nordic region’s first Dark Sky Park and first Dark Sky Community. If you are planning nighttime activities, check the visitor guidance on this.
History in Vordingborg and Stege
In Vordingborg, Danmarks Borgcenter brings together a museum, the castle ruins and Gåsetårnet in a medieval experience centre. Visitors can explore castles, power and history at their own pace; the centre is designed for the whole family. Gåsetårnet is 36 metres high and the only surviving tower of the former castle. The castle ruins also include the historic ring wall and the ruins of St Andrew’s Church. The site is well suited to walks, exploring history and picnics.
Other cultural sites offer different points of interest: Fanefjord Church is known for its frescoes and medieval furnishings; check access arrangements before visiting. The Historical-Botanical Garden in Vordingborg has preserved old folk plants since 1921, traditionally used for cultivation, beauty and healing. Stege is one of Denmark’s oldest market towns, with both medieval and more recent historical influences. The Møn Museum has been housed there in the Empiregården, an old merchant’s house, since 1958.
Excursions and activities
GeoCenter Møns Klint offers more than 20 indoor and outdoor experiences, including guided tours, a climbing and rope course, a 3D cinema and mountain bike tours. For rides on the trails of Klinteskoven, the GeoCenter rents out bicycles; the route and pace are adapted to each group. The minimum age is 12. Activity conditions and age rules may change. Guided fossil-hunting expeditions on the beach below the cliffs offer the chance to find fossils dating back 70 million years. The expeditions may be seasonal; check the current dates before making plans.
The Møn Biosphere’s summer calendar also offers a range of events from July to October: landscape excursions, activities focused on wild gardens, boat trips in shallow coastal waters and tastings exploring sustainable ways for people and nature to live together. Dates are seasonal; checking the calendar before making plans can help you choose. Along the Camønoen walking route are 250 apple trees of old local varieties, including Spejlsby Pigeon and Borre Kærneæble. The plantings may change over time.
