South Danish Islands: Vikings, Chalk and Trails
Accommodation in South Danish Islands
Viking ships, chalk fossils and extensive trails give the South Danish Islands their varied character. In Roskilde, you can experience history at the museum and cathedral; at Møns Klint, seasonal fossil hunts offer an introduction to geology. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether cultural sites, hiking and cycling routes, or nature experiences should be the main focus.
Vikings, a Cathedral and Royal Tombs
The Viking Ship Museum displays five original Viking ships. At its boatyard, visitors can watch ships being built; seasonally, there is also the opportunity to row out onto Roskilde Fjord in replicas. The fjord stretches 36 kilometres south from its mouth at Lynæs in the Isefjord to central Zealand. This combination of a museum visit and a trip on the water connects the study of Viking ships with a firsthand look at the fjord.
Roskilde Cathedral was Scandinavia’s first Gothic brick cathedral. Since the 16th century, it has served as the mausoleum of the Danish royal family. Trelleborg offers a different historical focus: the UNESCO World Heritage Site combines a museum with authentic Viking excavations, the ramparts of the ring fortress and the Viking village of Slagløse. The activity programme may vary. During the season, a free bus connects Slagelse station with Trelleborg; check the timetable before travelling.
Discover Chalk and Fossils
The chalk cliffs of Møns Klint contain fossils of animals that lived in a sea more than 65 million years ago. At the beach, visitors can take part in guided fossil hunts seasonally. GeoCenter Møns Klint offers more than 20 indoor and outdoor experiences; the programme may vary by season. During the high season and at selected times, there are open guided tours to the fossil beach, into the forest and on mountain bikes. This lets you explore the subject of chalk not only at the beach, but also through a range of guided activities.
Faxe Limestone Quarry also offers good opportunities to find fossils. Stevns Klint reaches down to the boundary between the Tertiary and Cretaceous periods. These geological sites offer different points of interest: here, Møns Klint is known for fossils from a prehistoric sea, Stevns Klint for the geological boundary, and at Faxe Limestone Quarry you can search for fossils yourself.
Hiking Trails and Cycling Routes
Fjordstien is a marked, 230-kilometre cycling and hiking trail. A 47-kilometre section runs between Roskilde and Holbæk. National cycle route N7 covers 231 kilometres around Zealand and is suitable for both road and hybrid bikes. The figures distinguish between a section of a longer route and the total length of an island route—useful when planning a specific cycling route for your trip rather than a larger circuit.
If you want to walk around Zealand, Sjællandsleden is a coastal hiking trail. Its notable routes include Camøno, Trampestien and Lagunestien. The western section passes through the municipalities of Slagelse, Sorø, Kalundborg and Holbæk and intersects with public transport at several points. Red dots and arrows mark the way along this section. This makes it possible to distinguish a longer coastal trail from individual marked sections; check public transport connections before setting out.
Forest, Heights and More Experiences
The 45-metre-high Forest Tower is reached by an elevated walkway through the forest at Gisselfeld, which is 3.2 kilometres long in total. If you are more interested in climbing courses, Camp Adventure has twelve courses that wind through and above a beech forest. Knuthenborg Safaripark is Northern Europe’s largest safari park. Each of these three examples offers a different focus: a tower with a forest walkway, climbing courses in a beech forest, or a large safari park.
Wine may also be of interest on your trip: Dyrehøj Vingaard offers guided winery tours and wine tastings as visitor experiences. The availability of tours and tastings may vary. If you would like to include a visit in your travel plans, check the current dates and availability.
