Frederikssund lies on Roskilde Fjord. The destination combines a strong Viking theme with art, church history and opportunities for outdoor activities. This lets you choose different focuses for your stay rather than planning your itinerary around just one type of attraction. You can also plan your journey in practical terms: an S-train line connects Frederikssund with the capital. It runs every 10 minutes and reaches Copenhagen Central Station in about 45 minutes. The S-train service to Copenhagen runs every 10 minutes; the journey to Copenhagen Central Station takes about 45 minutes. If you plan to use this connection, check the timetable before setting off.

Viking Culture on Kalvøen

Since 1952, the Frederikssund Vikingespil has staged Viking performances every year at the open-air theatre on Kalvøen. The productions bring dramatic tales from Danish Viking sagas and myths to life, with costumes and swords. Kalvøen has a park and an open-air theatre where the Vikingespil is performed in summer. Before the performances, you can also join guided tours of the Viking area on Kalvøen. If you want to combine a performance with a tour, take the performance dates into account when planning your visit.

Vikingebopladsen is in the south of Kalvøen, at the entrance to the entire Viking area, which includes the open-air theatre and the longhouse Valhal. Admission to the open-air museum is normally free. There are five pit houses there. These are small houses, partly dug into the ground, that were used as workshops and, in some cases, as temporary dwellings. Kalvøen was once an island in Roskilde Fjord.

Art, Church and Events

The collection at the Willumsens Museum comprises 8,000 works. The museum also offers creative educational programmes and activities for children and adults. Kulturhuset Elværket hosts exhibitions and provides a year-round venue for numerous events organised by its users and members.

Frederikssund Church also offers a distinctive historical perspective: its roots date back to the 12th century, and its pulpit dates from 1606. The church also hosts concerts and talks. This means you can include both religious history and cultural events in your cultural itinerary.

The present-day Kronprins Frederiks Bro is also part of the town’s history: it opened to car traffic on 30 October 1935.
