Discover Bogense: harbour, church and museum
Accommodation in Bogense
Bogense offers a range of options for a trip focused on culture and the coast: the old harbour of Bogense Gl. Havn, Bogense Church (Sankt Nikolaj Kirke), the Nordfyns Museum and Bogense Søbad. Other attractions include Bogense Torv, the Torvemarked i Bogense and the Kløverstierne. This gives you a choice of different focuses for planning your trip: historic buildings, museum collections, a visit to the market and activities by the water.
Harbour, square and market
The old harbour of Bogense Gl. Havn was established in 1828 and expanded in 1874 and 1894. Its history therefore includes its original construction and two later phases of expansion. Bogense Torv is surrounded by houses dating from the 18th century and protected lime trees planted in 1871. The Torvemarked i Bogense takes place every Thursday throughout the year in the old square in front of the church. If you plan to visit the market, you can use Thursday as a guide.
A church on the coast
Bogense Church, also known as Sankt Nikolaj Kirke, was built in the 12th century as a small village church. Its tower formerly served as an important sea mark and was visible from far away. The church stands on a coastal cliff; the church hill offers an impressive view of the sea. This building brings together church history, the tower’s former maritime function and its coastal setting.
Discover the Nordfyns Museum
The Nordfyns Museum is located in Bogense’s former railway station building. There, the museum presents stories and images of the former Nordfynske Jernbane: its connection to the railway is reflected both in the former station building and in the exhibits. The collection includes archaeological finds, objects from the former hospital, historic interiors and clothing, as well as a large collection of paintings. There is also a complete hairdressing and barber salon recreated as it was in 1920, and an old farmhouse parlour from North Funen. The museum’s collections and paintings sit alongside its historic interiors.
By the water and on the Kløverstierne
At Bogense Søbad, you can access the water via several sets of steps and a long bathing jetty. There is also a floating raft that swimmers can reach. The facilities include changing rooms, toilets and showers; a sauna is available during the winter season. You can use the Kløverstierne in Bogense on foot or by bicycle. This gives you a choice of different activities: swimming at Søbad or exploring the Kløverstierne on foot or by bike. There are two different seasonal schedules to bear in mind: the Torvemarked i Bogense takes place every Thursday throughout the year, while the sauna at Søbad is available in the winter season.
