Tryggelev combines nature observation at Tryggelev Nor with a distinctive cultural heritage. The wetland, the paths to Bronze Age burial mounds, and the historic complex at Tryggelev Church offer different points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel in Tryggelev, these destinations can help you decide what you want to focus on during your time there: birdwatching, history, or fishing.

Birdwatching at Tryggelev Nor

Tryggelev Nor is protected nationally and internationally as a bird protection and habitat area, and is also designated as a nature reserve to protect its distinctive birdlife. The nature reserve covers 170 hectares. Tryggelev Nor is one of Denmark’s most bird-rich wetlands and is home to a protected coastal lagoon habitat as well as rare bird species such as the bittern.

Birds can be observed here throughout the year. In spring and autumn, large flocks of waders, geese, and ducks can be seen. These two seasons are the seasonal highlight, but birdwatching is not limited to them. Those interested in migratory birds will find a clear seasonal focus, while the area is connected with birdlife year-round.

A floating observation hide with one-way windows allows you to watch birds close to the water’s surface. There are also birdwatching towers at Tryggelev Nor. The different viewing options offer more than one perspective on the nature area: the hide brings you down to water level, while the towers are also designed specifically for birdwatching.

Paths to the burial mounds

Of the seven Bronze Age burial mounds originally located at Tryggelev Nor, three remain today. A walking path to the burial mounds passes two birdwatching hides, one of which is above the water. This path therefore combines archaeological traces with opportunities to observe the Nor, so there is no need to plan these two activities separately.

The path from the car park at the end of Stenbækvej to the burial mounds is 550 metres long. The walking route at Tryggelev Nor is 1.7 kilometres long. There is also a 675-metre route at the Nor designed for visitors with limited mobility, suitable for wheelchairs, walkers, electric wheelchairs, and mobility scooters. In wet weather, the ground can become soft; it is worth taking this into account when planning.

The church, church barn, and local history

The cultural environment formed by Tryggelev Church, the church barn, and the old vicarage reveals 800 years of architectural, cultural, and local history. Romanesque elements can be seen at the church’s north door, in a window, and in the granite baptismal font. The church barn dates from around 1300. Together, these specific architectural features offer different ways to experience the long history of the area through its buildings.

This offers a different focus when choosing an excursion than the Nor: rather than seasonal birdwatching, the emphasis here is on architectural history and the interplay of the three historic buildings. The burial mounds add traces from the Bronze Age to this historical perspective. Those interested in Tryggelev’s past can explore different periods both in the village and at the Nor.

Fishing and planning your stay

Langelands Lystfiskersø in Tryggelev is a 10,000-square-metre put-and-take fishing lake stocked mainly with rainbow trout. Fishing rods can be rented there for four hours. Fishing is therefore another possible focus alongside nature observation and cultural history. You can choose which of the excursions described to prioritise according to your interests; they do not all require the same kind of stay.

In the wider Tryggelev area, regional buses serve the small villages in the Sydlangeland area. Check current connections before travelling.
