Rudkøbing offers a variety of options for a trip: exhibitions and historic buildings sit alongside hiking trails, cycling stages and the landscape of Rudkøbing Vejle. When planning, you can decide whether to focus on culture, outdoor activities or observing nature.

Culture and history in Rudkøbing

The H.C. Ørsted exhibition honours the scientist who was born in Rudkøbing. Interactive experiments on electromagnetism complement this biographical connection with a topic in natural science. The Langelands Museum focuses on finds from the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age, as well as artefacts from the Renaissance fishing village of Sandhagen.

Rudkøbing Kirke also brings together different historical details: its well-preserved nave dates from the late Romanesque period, while the tower, with its distinctive curved gables, was built in 1621. Rudkøbing Bymølle has stood on the city's rampart since the 17th century; the current mill has been there since 1820.

The Geopark Besøgscenter Langeland in Rudkøbing presents the geology and natural and cultural heritage of the UNESCO Global Geopark Det Sydfynske Øhav. Admission is free; please check before your visit whether free admission is still available. Together with the exhibitions and buildings, the visitor centre offers another way to explore the region's history and landscape.

Routes for walks, hikes and cycling

For a self-guided walk through Rudkøbing, the By- og Parkstierne cover a distance of 2.1 km. A longer hiking section of the Øhavsstien runs 13 km between Rudkøbing and Spodsbjerg. The two routes therefore differ considerably in length and in whether they pass through the town or between two places.

The 58 km section of the Øhavsstien on Langeland follows the coast, crosses the island through attractive natural areas and passes through Rudkøbing, Spodsbjerg and Lohals. Those who want to explore the island on foot will find a longer route with several named places and varied landscapes. The 13 km route between Rudkøbing and Spodsbjerg is a separate, shorter section.

For cyclists, the Bagenkop–Rudkøbing stage of the Herregårdsruten is 37 km long. Free bicycles can be borrowed at Rudkøbing Havn for trips in Rudkøbing and the surrounding area. Check availability before your trip. This makes it easy to match the hiking and cycling route information to your planned mode of transport.

Rudkøbing Vejle and the bathing facility

Rudkøbing Vejle was originally a fjord. Today, the landscape is a wet meadow in summer and forms shallow lakes in winter. The Vejle offers good opportunities to observe ducks and wading birds. Those who want to explore the area on foot can also find places to walk in Fredskoven, both on the open Vejle and in the sheltered forest.

Rudkøbing Badeanstalt is a public bathing facility. A ramp allows wheelchair users to access the water. Before visiting, check whether the bathing facility will be accessible on your chosen date.
