Sutomišćica lies in a sheltered bay on the east coast of the island of Ugljan. Two themes stand out when choosing a destination here: the Baroque country house Lantana and its history, and the different stretches of shoreline. Other highlights include churches, the view from Mount Vela Glava, and cycling routes on the island. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first decide whether you want to focus your stay on the coast, architectural history, or the landscape.

The country house and religious history

The Baroque country house Lantana dates from the 17th century and includes an extensive park and a chapel. It displays all the features of Venetian Baroque architecture. Until the fall of Venice in 1797, the country house hosted the ceremonial handover of the Venetian doge’s office for Dalmatia and Albania. The construction period and the ceremony thus point to two different historical aspects of the same place: its architecture and its function at the time.

The churches can also be distinguished by date. The church of Sveti Grgur is first mentioned on January 10, 1398. The parish church of Saint Euphemia is mentioned in 1349; a new church is recorded for 1679. The medallions kept in the parish church are cultural heritage of the Republic of Croatia. The two dates associated with the Euphemia church refer to different stages: the mention of the parish church and that of a new church.

Two different stretches of shoreline

Plaža Sutomišćica is in the middle of the village and is a pebble beach with a gently sloping entry into the sea. Facilities include sun loungers, a shower, and a changing cabin; there is also natural shade. As beach conditions and facilities may change, check before your visit.

At the far end of Sutomišćica is Sutomiška vala, a concrete beach on Cape Sveti Grgur. It has a well-developed access to the sea. The back of the cape is rocky and surrounded by cypress trees. The shoreline spots described here therefore differ both in their surface and their location: pebbles in the village center contrast with concrete on the cape. At one beach, the surface and gentle entry are defining features; at the other, it is the cape-side location and the developed access to the sea.

Vela Glava and the landscape of Ugljan

The remains of a monastery complex and the Sveti Mihovil fortress are located on Mount Vela Glava. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views of the city of Zadar and the Zadar Archipelago. The mountain thus combines traces of history with views of these two geographical destinations. Cape Sveti Grgur also has a historical connection: the chapel of Sveti Grgur there was restored in the 15th century.

Numerous developed cycling routes on the island of Ugljan run through centuries-old olive groves and cultivated fields. This island-wide setting adds another perspective on the landscape to Sutomišćica’s individual sights and beaches. If you are considering cycling routes, this context applies to the island of Ugljan as a whole.

Connection to Zadar

A boat service connects Sutomišćica to Zadar via the port of Preko. The port of Preko is 2 km away. Check the schedule before traveling, as schedules and operators may change. You can therefore take the connection and the distance to the port into account as separate points in your travel planning.
